Volkswagen recently promised that, despite its electric push, it will continue to invest in the internal combustion engine. That investment will mean greater efficiency to keep gas and diesel engines in line with coming regulations and the first improvements are already being announced.
The Golf TSI BlueMotion, VW has announced , will go all Bob Dylan with a new freewheeling system designed to improve mileage by up to 0.4L/100km, which according to some quick math amounts about 6 mpg in this case.
In combination with a 12-volt electrics system that runs the auxiliary systems (lights, cooling, steering), the Golf BlueMotion’s 1.5-liter engine can be shut off when the driver lifts their foot off the gas at speeds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph).
When the engine needs to be turned on again, there are a few ways to do that. The starter motor can be engaged, or the DSG gearbox’s clutches can be used, or, if the situation calls for it, both systems can be used in tandem.
“Our range of technology, especially that available for the Golf, now covers all customer preferences,” says Friedrich Eichler, head of powertrain development. “The new ‘Coasting – Engine off’ micro hybrid system represents a low-cost level of electric-powered motoring on a 12-volt basis.”
Unfortunately, the model and technology are unlikely to find their way stateside, but the new Golf TSI BlueMotion will launch in Europe this summer.
