Volkswagen design head Klaus Bischoff is saying that the production version of the electric ID hatchback will be true to the 2016 concept.
Bischoff, talking to Autocar, said that “the proportions, the design cues and the wheel size are the same as the concept. It looks like the show car. We couldn’t do the camera-system rear-view mirrors for legal reasons, nor the electric door handles due to cost. But other than that, it’s pretty much the same.”
The upcoming electric vehicle, expected to go on sale next year, looks like a Golf hatchback, designed for a movie set well into the future. On-road testing has started too, with the first pre-production prototypes arriving last month. That leaves VW just 16-months to complete development of the car, and is why the final design is now, well, final.
VW CEO Herbert Diess has said that intensive testing would start in September of this year, and that the cars are set to start production near the end of 2019. He expects them to arrive to market at a price “comparable to a diesel model.”
