Trump Tariff Threats Targeted German Automakers: Report

At his April meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron, US President Donald Trump said he would stick to his guns on a policy whose aim was to keep German cars from rolling down Fifth Avenue.

That’s according to a report from German magazine, Wirtschaftwoche, which claims that President Trump was intent on keeping German vehicles out of the US market through burdensome tariffs of 25%, though he had threatened to impose 35% tariffs in 2017.

While the president is reported to have used Mercedes in his rhetoric, such tariffs would have had an especially negative effect on Audi and Porsche, which, unlike BMW and Mercedes, has no US factories. Volkswagen, too, would have been at risk since only the Passat and Atlas are currently made in the US.

Such large tariffs would cost German automakers $5.25 billion and would effectively scupper the business case for German automakers, from whom the US receives the most automotive imports in the EU.

Last year, the Volkswagen Group delivered more than 975,000 vehicles to the US (whereas all German manufacturers built just 804,000 cars in the US last year). That accounts for 9% of the Group’s worldwide sales.

The value of EU exports to the US, meanwhile, was worth $43 billion, reports Automotive News. American exports to the EU, however, only accounted $7.3 billion—although GM was in the middle of pulling out of the European market last year and has now done so.

As it stands, European automakers still have an exemption from Trump’s tariffs, but Trump is expected to decide whether or not to end that exemption today, which could extinguish our hopes of ever seeing the Mk8 Golf R.

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence. Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything.
