Spy photographers have caught a Volkswagen T-Roc prototype testing in Europe.
At first glance, the T-Roc looks like the standard model, but it’s missing its fog lights and has a different exhaust setup in the rear. The quad-exhaust setup suggests this is a hotter variant being tested, possibly a GTI or R variant. There is also a 4Motion badge on the rear hatch, indicating that it’s an all-wheel-drive model.
This isn’t the first time spy photographers have caught a hotter T-Roc already being tested. In September 2017, photos of another T-Roc with the same quad-exhaust setup and 4Motion badge surfaced, leading to rumors that the T-Roc R is in the works.
[See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com]Since the compact crossover is based on the Volkswagen Golf, the German automaker can easily use different engines under the hood. That means power output ranging from 220 horsepower to 306 hp is a possibility, depending on if its a GTI or an R.
The big question remains whether Volkswagen will eventually decide to bring the T-Roc to North America. The compact crossover segment is growing, and a high-performance model would appeal to North American consumers.
