It’s not often that you can say a Porsche is like a muppet, but both have now taken on Manhattan.
Since ending its Le Mans program, Porsche has taken the leash off its 919 Hybrid and is taking it on what it’s calling a Tribute Tour. No, this is not the greatest tour in the world, this is just a tribute. But whatever your opinions on Porsche’s non-diesel tenacity, the tour has made its latest stop in New York City.
While watching a hardcore race car drive around on stilts so as not to ruin its expensive undercarriage on city streets is a little like watching a dog walk on its hind legs, it is, all the same, very cool to see the car driving around one of the world’s most recognizable cities. It reminds you just how space age the top racing series are in comparison to everyday cars.
The next stop on the tour is at Germany’s fearsome Nurburgring, where the scuttlebutt is that Porsche will try to break its own lap record. If you can wait until September, the 919 will be at Laguna Seca, in California.
