US Passat Redesign Delayed, Will Migrate Onto MQB

Volkswagen of America won’t be redesigning its Passat as soon as it thought due to a plan that would see the sedan migrate onto the MQB platform, a source with knowledge of situation says.

An update had been planned for 2018, but it now looks like the redesign will coincide with an update to the European Passat. No specific timeline for the move to the new platform was confirmed, though.

Despite that, the cars won’t be the same. “It’s not going to be a Euro Passat,” said the source. “It’s going to be designed in America, for America.”

That Volkswagen is looking to move the Passat over to MQB shouldn’t come as a surprise. In Europe, the latest Passat (B8) is already on the platform and the MQB-based three-row SUV (Teramont), set to be revealed this fall, is also being built in Chattanooga on the same line as the Passat.

Passat production moved to Chattanooga in 2011. The move was made in the hopes of avoiding exchange rate fluctuations and to better tailor the sedan to the North American market.

Volkswagen Group Records Best Ever First-Half-of-Year Sales

With 5.5 million vehicles in customer hands after the first six months of 2018, the Volkswagen Group is seeing the best performance of its history. Group deliveries increased significantly in all core regions,” said Fred Kappler, head of sales for the Group. “Our core brands recorded strong growth in the first half year.” For the year-to-date, all of Volkswagen’s brands had sales bumps. MAN, SEAT, and Skoda led the sales charge with performances 24%, 17% and 11% better than the previous year. The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance.
