Diess Confirms Electric Car Reveal at Paris

Although Volkswagen has made big promises about electric cars, up to now it hasn’t actually announced a pure-electric stand alone production car. That’s all set to change now, though, with a new Golf-sized electric car that VW will reveal at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Autocar reports that, though the car will be Golf-sized from the outside, thanks to its drivetrain packaging it will have the same amount of space on the inside as the Passat.

“It will make a huge statement,” a senior engineer with knowledge of VW’s R&D plans told Autocar. “It’s planned to use cutting-edge technology but at a price that makes it attainable for the average motorist.”

Autocar is also reporting that the car will sit on the MEB platform, that first appeared under the Budd-e concept. A source at VW told them, though, that the new Golf-sized EV is being developed separately from the Budd-e.

Following its reveal, it will officially launch in 2018 or 2019. Although there are no more details about the project, the VW Group’s CEO, Matthias Muller, confirmed earlier this year that engineers at the company have been challenged to create an electric car that will be as iconic as the Golf and will offer a 310 miles range.

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions.
