The Wall Street Journal is reporting that investigators at the US Department of Justice have found evidence of criminal acts associated with Volkswagen’s emissions scandal.
This will likely lead to criminal charges against Volkswagen and more financial penalties, but prosecutors have reportedly not yet decided what charges to pursue. Another settlement is reportedly being aimed at.
It’s being suggested that the settlement from a criminal could surpass the $1.2 billion settlement that Toyota paid in the wake of its sudden acceleration scandal.
At the beginning of the year Volkswagen set aside about $18 billion to deal with the financial repercussions of the emissions scandal, but following the recent $15 billion civil settlement the company recently agreed to it would seem that the fund is shrinking fast.
