Seinfeld Beetle Sets All Time Record at Auction

Jerry Seinfeld was at the Gooding & Company Amelia Island Auction this weekend selling 18 of his cars at the auction, among them an unrestored 1960 Beetle, which sold for $121,000, setting a new record for Beetles.

The white Beetle far exceeded its expected value of $55,000, which may be attributable to the car only having covered 15,500 miles in 56 years.

“I love the colors of this car and the mileage is ridiculous,” Seinfeld has said. “This is the last year of the classic 36 hp engine. I think selling this was a huge mistake.”

Seinfeld’s other VW at the auction, a 1964 Camper also did well, with the hammer dropping at $99,000 on the high end of its expected value. In all, Seinfeld’s collection sold for about $22 million.

Among the other Volkswagens that sold at the Gooding & Company Amelia Island Auction were a 1951 split window Beetle ($63,800) and a 1979 Beetle Cabriolet ($28,600).

Barrett-Jackson just wrapped up its 46th annual Scottsdale auction, which set all kinds of records, including the sale of Kindig-It Design’s 1965 21-Window Deluxe Bus for $302,500 (pictured above and below). Not only did that bus set an auction record, it was the highest priced Volkswagen in Scottsdale that week. While it outdid the next closest VW by quite a margin, it wasn’t the only high priced VW at the show.
