A 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus sold this weekend for $159,500. The totally restored ’23-window’, Turquoise Super Deluxe Microbus sold along with its matching camping trailer at the RM Sotheby’s at the Amelia Island auction.
The 23-window version is by far and away the most desirable iteration of long lived Microbus. It features a split front window, eight side windows, three rear windows, eight skylight windows, and, to be sure that it doesn’t feel claustrophobic, a full-length sliding sunroof.
The camper that sold along with the Microbus was an $800 (about $5,500 in today’s money) aftermarket item built specifically for these vehicles in 1967 and is thought to be one of only five remaining examples. It comes with a working kitchen, twin beds, a dining space, and some more windows.
The ‘bus underwent a full, bare-metal restoration in the mid-2000s and has since had its engine overhauled and its interior renewed (with matching luggage).
