In a new internal events series, Chairman of the Board for the Volkswagen brand Herbert Diess fielded questions from Volkswagen employees. In the series, dubbed “Straight Talking with Herbert Diess,” the chairman talks about his goals and the future of the brand.
“My goal is to make Volkswagen the Group’s shining star,” says Diess, going on to say that the process of achieving this is already in motion.
With the launch of the newest Tiguan, as well a new long Tiguan and a midsize SUV coming soon, Diess is optimistic that brand sales will accelerate in the Americas.
The plan does not revolve around any individual moment or product, though, says Diess. “The automobile industry is … like a marathon,” he says, arguing that consistent progress across the whole range of products is more important than a narrow or grand plan.
“We don’t need a huge vision,” he says, “we just need new goals every day. And that’s we’ve got.”
The chairman still has his eyes on the future, though, and safety is a focus. The current Golf, which is equipped with assistance systems, has 45 percent fewer accidents that comparable vehicles and the brand hopes to see even fewer. With the advent of autonomous driving Diess predicts that “accidents will hardly ever happen any more.”
