The egg-heads at Lamborghini working on the cutting edge of carbon-fiber development, though, are using their knowledge for something more altruistic.
Working together with the Houston Methodist Research Institute, Lamborghini is helping to make better prosthetics. Together, they are focusing on biocompatibility when using carbon-fiber for implants and for devices planted under the skin.
The hope is that carbon-fiber will last longer than current materials and will be better tolerated by the human body. Carbone is also lighter and stronger than current materials, making prostheses easier to live with.
The project is, ironically, being conducted with Dr. Mauro Ferrari, the president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Ferrari is a scientist from Italy mainly focused on nanotechnology and bioengineering.
Lamborghini is a world leader in carbon-fiber development, having recently opened a laboratory dedicated to the material near Seattle. The wider car industry is in many ways to thank for the current relative ubiquity of carbon that has made it more affordable.
Lamborghini already works with the Occupational Medicine Unit at the University of Bologna, the Neurosurgery wing of the Institute of Neurological Sciences of Bologna, and more, using its expertise to help improve the field of medicine.
