A new V6 engine may be joining the Volkswagen range as reports from Europe suggest that the brand is working on a more powerful unit for the Arteon.
Speaking to the UK’s AutoExpress, Dr Elmar-Marius Licharz, head of the mid- and full-size product line said: “If we build a six-cylinder engine – we are discussing it for the Arteon, we have built one already in a prototype vehicle – it will be one which you can also use in the Atlas and vice versa.”
Volkswagen engine fans will no doubt have noted that the Atlas already comes with a V6 engine, leading to speculation that Licharz was discussing a brand new, more powerful six-cylinder unit that could even be turbocharged.
AutoExpress notes that no European VW based on the MQB platform currently comes with a V6 engine, which is evidence in the case for a new six-cylinder unit. On the other hand, the Atlas is based on MQB, so there is proof that the current V6 can work with the platform.
Returning to the Arteon, Licharz said: “I would like to make an [Arteon] shooting brake – these plans are underway but it’s not yet final.”
