Report: Next GLI to Get 2.0T and Better Suspension

The new Jetta is a symphony in compromise. Trying to make a cheap car that doesn’t feel cheap seems to have been the main remit for VW’s engineers, and we can tell you they’ve largely succeeded.

And while that’s fine for the base model, which just has to ferry people around comfortably, the system does kind of fall apart when you try to make a sports car out of it. Fortunately, according to a report from Autoblog, you don’t have to worry about that.

In the best tradition of economy sports cars, VW is raiding the parts bin to make the GLI a performer.

Gone will be the torsion beam rear axle in favor of a more modern multi-link unit borrowed from the Golf family. The GLI will also dispose of the… adequate 1.4-liter straight four that powers standard Jettas in favor of VW’s ubiquitous 2.0-liter engine.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t exactly give us a clear picture of how much power the GLI will make, since VW’s 2.0-liter is capable of anything from 180 hp to 300 hp.

More information will be available when VW reveals the GLI later this year. We wait with baited breath.

Barrett-Jackson just wrapped up its 46th annual Scottsdale auction, which set all kinds of records, including the sale of Kindig-It Design’s 1965 21-Window Deluxe Bus for $302,500 (pictured above and below). Not only did that bus set an auction record, it was the highest priced Volkswagen in Scottsdale that week.
