Many automakers have developed Vision Gran Turismo cars, but very few have made something that actually runs and drives.
Audi’s forward-thinking concept for the Playstation racing game is an actual working car that will be giving thrill rides to lucky attendees of future Formula E races. It was built over an 11-month period by a particularly handy set of Audi employees at its pre-production center in Germany. The high beltline coupe is powered by three electric motors – two mounted on the rear axle and one on the front. It has a total system output of 815 hp and weighs just 3,200 lbs, enabling a short 0-62 mph sprint of just 2.5s.
The exterior of the Audi Vision GT is inspired by the legendary Audi 90 IMSA GTO, which took second in the 1989 IMSA Championship’s GTO class. Audi says the concept also “incorporates numerous elements” of its new design language, such as the body-color inverted single-frame grille – a feature that it says will be seen on all future Audi e-tron models.
“Although the design of a virtual vehicle allows much greater freedom and the creation of concepts which are only hard to implement in reality, we did not want to put a purely fictitious concept on wheels,” said Audi desinger March Lichte. “Our aim was a fully functional car.”
The Audi Vision GT will make its on-track debut at the upcoming Formula E round in Rome. It will also make appearances at every Formula E race held in Europe, and is set to travel to several other motorsports events throughout 2018.
