The Porsche 911 GT3 RS has lapped the 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife in a stunning 6 minutes and 56.4 seconds, beating just about every one of its supercar rivals by an embarrassingly large margin.
The Weissach Package-equipped 911 GT3 RS was driven by Porsche works drivers Kevin Estre and Lars Kern, with Estre setting the faster lap of the two. Each of the drivers completed four laps of the Nurburgring in the GT3 RS, with all eight of the laps clocking in at under seven minutes. Estre’s fast lap begun at 11:40 am in ideal conditions, Porsche says, with near-perfect ambient and track temperatures. The 29-year old Frenchman warmed up to the GT3 RS quite easily, as he spends his working days driving a 911 GT3 R racecar that’s not all that different from the production-spec GT3 RS.
“This lap was a sensational experience for me”, Estre said. “Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. This is also thanks to the new generation of tires for road-going sports cars. I like the engine of the GT3 RS a lot. Up to 9,000 revs per minute from a six-cylinder engine just feels fantastic. The sound is a dream and the torque is massive.”
Porsche’s two track-focused 911s, the GT3 RS and GT2 RS, are now the undisputed kings of the Nurburgring. The 911 GT2 RS is the current production car record holder with a lap time of 6:47.25, while the less powerful GT3 RS is faster than just about every non-Porsche car to turn in a lap at the daunting Green Hell. The only road-going cars that can beat it are some Radicals, which are just racecars with indicators, and the Lamborghini Huracan Performante – which is much more powerful, has active aero and is also all-wheel drive. It seems other automakers need to step their game up if they want to beat Porsche at the ‘Ring.
