Porsche Eyes 4.0L Flat Six With 9,500 RPM Redline

Porsche  is hopeful that its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine will live on and is even investigating an evolved version with a sky-high redline of 9,500 RPM.    Speaking to Australian publication Which Car , Porsche’s head of GT road car engines, Thomas Mader, said he does not think the 991.2 GT3 RS’ 4.0-liter flat-six will go away. He said they are investigating ways to improve its power and drivability, including raising its redline from 9,000 RPM to 9,500 and increasing the stroke. None of these theoretical improvements are for sure, though, with Mader saying such decisions are left to Porsche engine designers. Mader also said Porsche will “look at the things we have on (the) racetrack to put it in the street car.” This appears to further allude to the high-revving 4.0-liter engine, as the mid-engine 911 RSR’s 4.0-liter powerplant revs to 9,500 RPM and emits an unforgettable flat-six scream. Mader explained that the engine lifetime for a road car is different, though,

Not Particularly Convincing VW I.D. Image Allegedly Leaks

Germany’s Bild newspaper claims to have found the first official pictures of the Volkswagen Neo, the production version of the I.D. hatchback concept. Set to be revealed next year, the Neo will be VW’s first vehicle based on the MEB electric platform. Similar to the MQB platform, MEB will underpin everything from this hatchback to sedans to SUVs from VW, Skoda, SEAT, and more. According to VW, the platform is good for between 400 and 600 km of range (250-375 miles) depending on size and spec.  Expected to take over from its diesel models for reasons I hardly have to remind you of, the Neo should cost roughly the same amount as a Golf TDI in Europe. Americans, meanwhile, won’t be so lucky since VW currently has no plans to bring the hatchback here.  We will instead get an electric crossover based on the same MEB platform that is currently known as the I.D. Crozz. Following that, though, VW has promised to build an electric microbus called the I.D. Buzz.  As for the accuracy of the

Ratty Rescue: Brown Bunny

What can brown do for you? In the case of our latest Ratty Rescue, quite a bit. If you’re in the market for a new project, this 1979 Rabbit could be just the car you’re looking for. When searching for rust-free older Volkswagens, it’s tough to beat the Pacific Northwest. The mild climate doesn’t see much snow, and therefore, not any salt. Cars there last quite a bit longer than others in the upper region of the country. And Seattle and Portland people seem to love VWs; there are over 972 on Craigslist today and that’s just the “for sale by owner” ones. Impressive. Despite some dents and dings, it looks pretty darn good for its age. There’s a touch of rust on the passenger rear panel thanks to a dent in the metal. Another dent is on the driver’s front fender. The seller says there’s some surface rust in the usual places, but the metallic brown paint still shines nicely. The interior looks pretty good as well. The two spoke steering wheel is pure late-70s design. The dash might be a li

2019 Toyota Corolla vs. compact hatchbacks: How they compare

Filed under: Chevrolet , Honda , Mazda , Subaru , Toyota , Volkswagen , Hatchback , Comparison So you've read what we thought about the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback.Well, now you must be wondering how that new 2019 Corolla stacks up with all the other hatchbacks. And, despite long thinking that hatchbacks were doomed, there are actually quite a lot of them these days. So many, in fact, that we couldn't fit them all in our space-limited comparison chart. VW Bringing New Hybrids, Natural Gas, and Diesel Hybrids to Market

Volkswagen is adding a trio of new drivetrain systems to help the company offer lower emissions choices in its vehicles. There will be a new mild-hybrid, natural gas, and an all-new diesel hybrid option. The 48-volt hybrid system was announced yesterday. It will use a belt-driven starter generator that will allow more stop-start, more time spent coasting with the engine off, and allow for regenerative braking to help save fuel. The new information is that Volkswagen is launching a completely new 2.0L TDI diesel engine. The four-cylinder is designed to meet current and future expected emissions requirements. The engines will be used in Audi vehicles as well, in both longitudinal and transverse-mount platforms. The new engine is expected to offer a range of outputs of between 136 and 204 hp. It will also be one of the first diesel engines to offer a hybrid system. A 12-volt mild hybrid system will also a have a lithium-ion battery. VW says that this will further reduce fuel consumpti

Abt Bringing R8 Art Car to Worthersee

While the idea of an art car was popularized by BMW, ABT Sportsline sees no reason why they shouldn’t join in on the fun. The result is this Harlequinesque R8 that the tuners are taking to Worthersee. Designed by artist/cartoonist/public speaker Timo Wuerz , the car is called “Nun Meets Abbot” (Abt being the German word for abbot) because, as ABT puts it, it might lead people into temptation. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] If you’re interested in a similar, albeit less intricately wrapped R8, ABT is only too happy to help. With better exhausts and carbon tipped twin tailpipes, the ABT R8 makes some 630 hp. To go with the 20 extra horses, ABT also shaved off 50 lbs. Finally the tuning house stuck some specially designed coilovers onto the car to make sure that it doesn’t handle as wildly as it looks. Along with the R8, ABT will be bringing one of its RS4-R Avants. Making 530 hp and bedecked in aero mods, the Avant accelerates to 60 in just 3.8 seconds. Check them out nex

Watch: The I.D. R On Track

This week was the Volkswagen ID R’s first as a real life and to celebrate it got to stretch its legs at a track on France’s Cevennes mountain range. The track is in Ales, driver Romain Dumas’ hometown and it’s where the driver trained for his previous Pikes Peak drives. With an aero package based heavily on Porsche’s erstwhile Le Mans racer (the French connections keep coming), the 919, VW is making the best of its empire. Dumas should also be comfortable with the package since he raced the 919 to victory in 2016. Pikes Peak is a particularly good place to show off an electric vehicle because the altitude (on top of requiring the massive aero elements) tends to slow down internal combustion cars near the top. VW faces its own problems getting to the top, though, since electric vehicles require so many batteries to run quickly. If you saw the car’s horsepower figures earlier this week (680 hp, 480 lb-ft of torque) and weren’t quite blown away, that’s as a result of VW’s need to bal

Model Rewind: The Lamborghini Diablo SE30 Jota

In automotive terms, the word ‘rare’ has many different meanings. A one-year-only paint color can be rare. A body style with a certain transmission can be rare. Entire model lines can be rare, as can entire automotive manufacturing companies. Lamborghini is one such company. If you live on a coast or large city, you may see these Italian wedges from time to time. For some people in more remote areas, they may only see a Lambo once every few years. Some may never see one in-person in their lifetime. That’s pretty darn rare. The 1993 Lamborghini Diablo SE30 Jota takes an already uncommon car to an even rarer level. For its 30th anniversary, the company premiered a limited-edition Diablo in 1993, the SE30. The unique cars have revised V-12 engines with magnesium intake runners, upgraded camshafts, a lighter crankshaft, and a revised exhaust. The revised engine is taller than the standard V-12 so a revised decklid covers the back of the car. It has rooftop scoops to feed fresh air to the

VW Sees Record High Q1 Deliveries

Herbert Diess’ second week as CEO of the Volkswagen Group comes with the task of reporting a positive, if slightly less profitable than expected financial results for the first quarter of 2018. Deliveries for the first three months of 2018 rose steeply, with the Group delivering 7.4% more vehicles so far this year than it had last year. As a result, sales revenue also rose (by 3.6%) but VW’s operating result dropped by 3.6%. This despite R&D costs falling by 0.4%. This, argues VW, is due to a change in the way it reports the valuation of its derivatives. As a result, the Group is optimistic about the first quarter, as well as its outlook for the year to come. “The Volkswagen Group is in a robust economic position,” said Diess in a statement. “It is now a matter of pursuing this course in a strong and focused manner. After all, the speed of change in our industry is still increasing. Our goal is to transform the Volkswagen Group into one of the industry’s leading companies in te

Next Golf Getting Mild Hybrid

Volkswagen has announced that the hybrids are coming, starting with a new mild hybrid system for the new Mk 8 Golf. VW is calling the new 48-volt mild hybrid system the starting point for the electrification of its conventional vehicles. It uses a 48-volt belt-driven starter generator and a 48V battery. The system lets the car coast with the engine off at certain speeds and conditions, which VW says saves up to 0.3L of fuel per 100 km. that’s about one-tenth of a gallon per 100 miles. The new hybrid system also allows more intensive use of the start-stop system, and at higher speeds. That saves more fuel. On top of that, the system adds power and torque to the car, making for improved dynamics from a start. The starter generator feeds the car’s electrical system when the engine is running, but can recover energy using regenerative braking when the car slows. Dr. Frank Welsch, the Volkswagen board member for technical development said that “this new product strategy will come into p

Spied: 2020 R8 Hiding Under Skimpy Cammo

Our spy photographers in Ingolstadt have been hot on the case following a new R8 that’s under development with a few tantalizing details. Sporting some strategic camouflage, Audi is hiding a facelift that we expect to see for the 2020 model year. A revised bumper eschews the vertical winglets on the air intake and adds a little bit of bodywork under the headlights. The crease under the passenger doors, meanwhile, appears to sharpen a bit over the current model, and out back the diffusor is a little less aggressive, despite the V10 Plus spoiler. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Most intriguingly, this R8 has oval RS tailpipes, which could easily lead you down a path of conjecture and assumption. So let’s head down the path. The oval tailpipes, along with the less-aggressive diffusor, has led some to suspect that this is the fabled R8 V6 . Apparently unperturbed by Audi’s consistent denial , the rumors say that this will bear the RS5’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 making somethi

2019 VW Jetta has come a long way from the 1980 original

Filed under: Volkswagen , Sedan , Budget The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta changed quite a bit from its immediate predecessor. It gained a heaping helping of style, changed up its suspension, and became a bit more efficient. But the differences between those two generations are minuscule next to those between the 2019 and the original 1980 VW Jetta. And those differences have been highlighted by VW, which produced a video showing off examples of each, and a whole bunch of information and specs on the two cars. Gallery: A Thinly Veiled Excuse to Post Pictures of a Squeaky Clean Mk1 Jetta

Volkswagen of America is talking about the new Jetta again today, comparing it to the old one and I suspect that they just wanted an excuse to post pictures of their very clean 1980 Jetta. We couldn’t be more on board with that program. Billed as a Rabbit with a trunk, the Jetta initially was a way to add more cargo space to the Golf family. Building off of Giugiaro’s masterful design work, the Jetta, much like the Golf, was an instant success. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The Jetta was particularly successful in America, quickly becoming the best-selling German car in America. And it remains Volkswagen’s biggest seller to this day. A feat we think the new Jetta has a very good chance of continuing .  In the time between the Jetta first hitting American road and now, though, there have been some significant gains. Originally offered with only 76 hp that figure has now doubled to 147 hp, while torque has increased even more (83 lb-ft for the 1980 model; 185 lb-ft for th

2018 Volkswagen Atlas SEL V6 Quick Spin Review

Filed under: Volkswagen , Quick Spins , Crossover The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a strange beast. It's both exactly what the company needs in the US marketplace right now, and it's also a crossover that leaves us a bit cold. Crossovers aren't exactly a genre that engenders a great deal of passion in buyers concerned with practicalities, like fuel economy, interior storage, and safety. But the Atlas is more passionless than most, a strange turn for Volkswagen, a company whose most pedestrian vehicles have had some baked-in European goodness. Find of the Day: Death Cab For You-tie

Everyone has their fun side, right? Even the most stoic person likes to cut loose on a Friday night. If your death metal loving heart yearns to live free, our latest Find Of The Day , a 1992 Cabriolet could be just the thing your dark soul needs. It’s fun but still dark. The Volkswagen Cabriolet has a bit of a cult following. These little cars are light and nimble – if the inside rear wheel raises in a corner, then you’re really having fun. But the Cabby has an unfortunate image: the Chick Car. Just about every teen movie from the decade has a scene with a triple-white Cabriolet driven by a blond girl. But this Cabriolet, well, this one tears the head off the Chick Car image, Ozzy-style. It’s dark. It’s fast. It has killer Recaro seats and a top that goes down. The hardcore fun starts under the hood. A 2.0L short block bored out to 2.1 liters growls in the engine bay. This tiny bruiser powerplant bolts up to a 5-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter. Exhaust exits thro

Watch: A VR12 Golf Does Front and then Rear Wheel Burnouts

It surely won’t have escaped your notice that Volkswagen is returning to Pikes Peak for the first time in nigh on 30 years—t he last run being accomplished by a twin-engine Golf that ultimately couldn’t make it all the way up to the Peak. I bring this up only to point out how very difficult it is to get two engines to work together and how very impressed we are that someone managed to do it without the financial backing of one of the world’s largest automotive empires. But that’s exactly what you see in this video from YouTuber SuicideCRX, who talks to the maker of this twin-engine VR12 Golf. Admittedly, it sounds like the car has been anything but problem-free. “It breaks the CV joints, it breaks the axles, it breaks the motor mounts, it breaks everything,” says the guy racing the Golf. “I just keep fixing it. You know, playing whack-a-mole with it.” Kind of sounds like more trouble than it’s worth, doesn’t it? And yet, people keep trying it, and one of the reasons for that is

Canepa Upgrade Kit Boosts Porsche 959 to 777 HP

In 1986, American racer and car enthusiast Bruce Canepa drove a then-new  Porsche  959 during a visit to Europe.   The Porsche 959 didn’t meet the proper regulations to give it US compliance at the time, which gave Canepa an idea. He would find out exactly what the 959 needed to be street legal in America, source the components and then convert the vehicles for customers. He didn’t just make them legal, though – he also made them faster. In 1993, Canepa’s company introduced its first-generation upgrade kit for the 959, which boosted output from 444 hp to 576 hp. The American restoration specialists then introduced a second-gen upgrade kit that raised the bar to 640 hp, and just last year detailed a third-gen version with 763 hp. Today, Canepa remains just as obsessed with improving the 959 as it did in 1993. The company recently rolled out an even more powerful engine upgrade for the 959, which it says boosts output by 75% percent from stock, and also detailed a new restorations progr

Watch: Mk 7 Widebody GTI Behind the Build

You might remember the widebody Golf GTI that was part of VW’s “enthusiast vehicle fleet” that toured the US last summer. It’s wearing a massively wide-body, borrows design cues from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and has a stripped and race-ready interior. And a great big roof box, because why not? The car was created by Sam Dobbins, the creative director of Vossen wheels and a long-shooting automotive photographer. Now he’s uploaded a video explaining how and why his nearly-new GTI turned into this very custom car. It started with a rear-ending and grew from there. Watch the video and hear the rest of the story. The post Watch: Mk 7 Widebody GTI Behind the Build appeared first on VWVortex . from VWVortex https://ift.tt/2qXARK2 via IFTTT

Ratty Rescue: Green GTI

To any Volkswagen lover, the three greatest letters you can read after “For Sale” are G, T, and I. This week’s Ratty Rescue is not just any GTI, but the famed “Motor Trend Car of the Year” MK2. For just a bit of green, you can park this hot hatch in your driveway. We’ve covered the GTI extensively: take one basic hatchback, swap out the drivetrain for something with more power, add some suspension enhancements, and you’ve got an inexpensive car with serious performance chops. When Volkswagen introduced the GTI there wasn’t anything else like it on the road. It’s one of VW’s most iconic vehicles. The MK2 GTI took the original model’s formula and built on it. It’s a little more refined, a bit bigger, and offers more performance. The second-gen hatch gathered praise from all the media. Sure there are cars from that era that are faster, or more luxurious, or handle better, but the GTI wraps all that up in a practical and affordable package. It’s a “have your cake and eat it too” kind of

The VW I.D. R Races to 60 Faster than an F1 Car

Volkswagen’s motorsport division was in the French mountain town of Alès for the reveal of the I.D. R, its latest racer and Pikes Peak record hopeful. Shown in naked carbon fiber, with only a scant few sponsor stickers on it, VW finally revealed that the I.D. R will make 680 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. That power will be sent to all four wheels, but thanks to its electric power supply, torque will be fed to the wheels that need it most, for active torque vectoring. That should help it get its 1,100 kgs (2,425 lbs) up the famous hill climb in a hurry and, indeed, gets it to 60 mph in just 2.25 seconds, faster than most current F1 and Formula E cars. That will be important if they hope to earn the electric record at Pikes Peak (8:57.1, set in 2016). The question of weight was an important one, since VW decided that they wanted to prioritize out and out pace over everything else. To run an electric motor ragged requires a lot of power and, by extension, a lot of batteries. To keep thi

Porsche’s Powertrain Boss Arrested in Connection with Dieselgate

The Dieselgate scandal continues, as Joerg Kerner, Porsche’s head of powertrain development, was arrested earlier today by German police. Kerner is being detained because he is considered a flight risk, according to a report from Automotive News . The arrest follows a raid on Porsche and Audi offices earlier this week, where prosecutors searched 10 premises in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. The police said they were investigating three individuals, but no names were released. Regarded as a confidant of Matthias Mueller’s, who prior to becoming CEO of the VW Group (a post he left just last week) was the CEO of Porsche, Kerner started his tenure in the VW Group at Audi in 2004. There, he played a central role in the design of Audi’s engine and transmission electronics design. That, in turn, was the area of interest in the Dieselgate scandal, since engine and transmission software was used to game emissions testing equipment.  According to  Automotive News Kerner also worked closel

The  Porsche  911 GT3 RS has lapped the 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife in a stunning 6 minutes and 56.4 seconds, beating just about every one of its supercar rivals by an embarrassingly large margin. The Weissach Package-equipped 911 GT3 RS was driven by Porsche works drivers Kevin Estre and Lars Kern, with Estre setting the faster lap of the two. Each of the drivers completed four laps of the Nurburgring in the GT3 RS, with all eight of the laps clocking in at under seven minutes. Estre’s fast lap begun at 11:40 am in ideal conditions, Porsche says, with near-perfect ambient and track temperatures. The 29-year old Frenchman warmed up to the GT3 RS quite easily, as he spends his working days driving a 911 GT3 R racecar that’s not all that different from the production-spec GT3 RS. “This lap was a sensational experience for me”, Estre said. “Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. You may have already seen the Lego Technic  Porsche  911 GT3 RS, which is impressively large for a build-it-yourself model at 1:8 scale. The Lego Technic 911 GT3 RS has nothing on this, though. What you’re looking at is the life-size Lego Porsche 911 Turbo that is currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. The big green creation is modeled after a 930 911 Turbo, but is designed to look like it was made out of Lego bricks. A new report from Germany’s Auto Bild suggests that the Tiguan R, Arteon R, and T-Roc R are all around the corner. Being roughly the same size as a Polo on stilts, the T-Roc is allegedly set to gain the same 2.0-liter powerplant that moves the Golf R along. Output hasn’t yet been confirmed, but we know that the engine is capable of churning out at least 310 hp, so we have high hopes that VW won’t water down the brand by limiting the engine too much. As for the Tiguan, Auto Bild believes it too will also use the 2.0-liter engine fr
