Watch: The Other Way to Go to Baja

There are two kinds of people in the world: people who plan meticulously and those who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants. The Hoonigans are the latter.

The setup is simple here: buy the cheapest running Baja bug you can and take to the Baja 1000.

We recently featured a video of Jason Torchinsky driving the Project Baja Beetle, which raced the event this year after six years of planning with a support crew driven down the peninsula by nearly a dozen cars. In other words, they did it right.

Hoonigan did not. To be fair, the last minute plan came together out of necessity. According to the video, Hoonigan had planned to take a pair of Ford Raptors to Baja, but the plan fell apart and they only wanted to drive the support roads, not the actual racetrack. So there was, at least, plan in place, it just wasn’t a thorough one.

As the guys point out, though, fixing the Beetle turns out to be pretty easy and cheap, which is why we all need more air-cooled VWs in our lives.

Unfortunately, the video above only covers the race prep, but another video about the drive is imminent.

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
