Watch: BEETLE ENGINE REBUILD TIMELAPSE!!!

Hagerty’s excellent “Redline Rebuild” series has been shooting timelapses of engine rebuilds and posting the result to YouTube for a while now and the weirdly calming process of seeing a dirty engine become clean is as hypnotizing as it is engaging.

After six episodes covering everything from the venerated small block Chevy to the alarmingly complicated automatic transmission from a Ford Thunderbird, the Redline Rebuilders are finally moving on to the legendary Volkswagen flat four.

After watching the rebuild, you might be tempted to go out and buy a Beetle—if you don’t already own one—just to tear the engine apart. Unfortunately, by the videomakers’ own admission, this wasn’t as easy as it looked.

“Don’t let anyone tell you that rebuilding an old Volkswagen Beetle engine is easy,” they write in the video description. “After countless hours of work, some busted knuckles, more than a few trips to the parts store, some heavy-duty Googling, and another 30,000 photos, we present our seventh Redline Rebuild time-lapse video.”

The engine in question comes from a 1972 Beetle that was found in Portland, Oregon.

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively. Expect Ogier to climb the rankings, though. Not only did he win the rally last year, he has won every year since 2013.
