These are the Cars of Gran Turismo Sport

Gran Turismo Sport is almost here and while the latest installment in the PlayStation racing series is down a few cars over last time, there are still lots of good choices. Especially if you’re a fan of Porsche. The German sports car brand is making the game for the first time with a quartet of cars.

There are 162 cars this time. That’s a big drop from the 1,197 in Gran Turismo 6, but keep in mind that many of those cars were “standard” models. Which was code for “designed for PlayStation 2 and not updated since.”

So what Porsches made the cut? There are 911s. Two of them. A 991 GT3 RS – that’s the fender-vented, huge-winged 911 with a 500 hp 4.0L flat six and PDK – and the 2017 911 RSR. The second one is the mid-engine Le Mans GT racer that pushes the boundary of what is still a 911. There is also a Le Mans Prototype 919 Hybrid and a Cayman GT4 Clubsport. The Clubsport was a turn-key sports-racer.

There is a pair of Audi racers, a LeMans-wining R18 TDI and an R8 LMS sports racer. The game will also see the Audi Sport quattro S1 car that won the 1987 Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. That’s the big-wing, square body car that helped make quattro what it is today. There is also a pair of TTs. An Audi Sport TT Cup, and a 2014 TTS Coupe. The Sport TT Cup racer is from a single-make series that supports the DTM series.

Bugatti fans will see two versions of the W16-powered Veyron, as well as two versions of the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo. That was a concept designed as part of the Vision Gran Turismo project and previewed the styling of the Chiron.

Lamborghini sees two Huracán racers, as well as a production Huracán LP 610-4. The Veneno, Lambo’s Aventador-based 50th-anniversary celebration car that was limited to just five cars.

Volkswagen sees six cars make the list. But three of them are GTI Vision Gran Turismo concepts. There is a GT3 Beetle, a Mk7 GTI, and the new Scirocco.

Other highlights include the Aston Martin Vulcan track day car, a BMW M4 (and an oddly-placed i3), the Dodge SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo concept, the The Ferrari, a 125 cc shifter cart, and a Mazda 6 Group 4 race car. Conspicuously absent are any vintage Subaru WRX STI models, or anything with a V-Spec badge.

The cars in GT Sport get new classifications. The new cars start with Group N, which is for stock-appearing cars. It then goes through Group 4, 3, and 1, with varying levels of race-car readiness. Group 4 is GT3-style sports cars, and Groupe 1 is Le Mans Prototype racers. Group B is rally-ready cars, inspired by the legendary 1980s rally class that bore the same name. Finally, Group X is made up of crazy one-off concepts that were designed specifically for Project Vision Gran Turismo. Check out this video for an explanation of the categories.

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...

Watch: The Story of the Ads that Made VW Big in America

The ads for the original Beetle are almost as famous and well-loved as the Beetle itself. Looking back now it’s easy to forget, though, just how easily things could have wrong. A new short from Dial M Films tracks the history of those early Volkswagen ads that sold America on the people’s car. The story, of course, begins with the visionary agency that made the ads: Doyle Dane Bernach (DDB). As a popular agency for Jewish products, no agency was more aware of the implications of Volkswagen, and no one, it seems, was more skeptical of the brand than DDB. “Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads?” from Dial M Films on Vimeo . William Bernbach, though, was adament that the firm take the client, probably as a way of attracting other lucrative automotive clients. Saddled with a client that he didn’t want, art director Helmut Krone says in the film that he originally came up with ads that were all wrong. Krone tried to do what other manufacturers did and was intent on selling the Beetle ...

Watch: The Zerouno Cruis’n USA

ItalDesign is drumming up excitement for its new supercar based around the same 5.2-liter Audi V10 that powers the R8. Naturally, it hit the road for a cruise around California last week to celebrate Monterey Car Week. There isn’t much in the way of V10 noise—which is a real shame given the sound it makes—but you do at least get a good look at the car inside and out in this video. With a body made entirely of carbon fiber and designed to be as aerodynamic and light as possible, ItalDesign figures that it will be good for a 0-60 time of just 3.2 seconds. “We put it our best skills into the production of the first car,” said Massimo Bovi, head of pre-series production, when the Zerouno was first unveiled in Geneva earlier this year. “Using some of the finest productions methods and engaging our high-skilled workers.” The car features clever aero tricks gleaned from single-seat racing, like a y-duct up front to improve downforce and turn-in. Available in a number of trim levels, the...
