Volkswagen Could Build an Electric Car in the US by 2020

Hinrich Woebcken has confirmed that Volkswagen plans to make an electric vehicle in North America by 2020, reports the Wall Street Journal. The question remains, though, as to whether it will be built in Chattanooga or Mexico.

“We believe that this country, especially in urban mobility, will have a very strong shift from petrol engines into hybridization and electric car,” Woebcken told the Wall Street Journal. “We are heavily investing in this one—including production in this North American region.”

Unfortunately, Woebcken would not provide any more details on what is going into the decision, but said that multiple models will be built in North America.

That said, Reuters reported last month that an electric variant of the Audi Q5 SUV will be built at the Mexico plant.

It was also revealed this weekend that Audi plans on building three electric cars by 2020. Both brands’ moves towards electric vehicles are part of the Volkswagen AG commitment to have electric vehicles make up 25% to 30% of their sales by 2025.

ItalDesign is drumming up excitement for its new supercar based around the same 5.2-liter Audi V10 that powers the R8. Naturally, it hit the road for a cruise around California last week to celebrate Monterey Car Week.
