The South Korean environment ministry will decide later this month whether or not to stop sales of 32 Volkswagen Group models following accusations that the manufacturer fabricated emissions and noise-level test documents, reports Automotive News.
The ministry will make the decision revoke the certification for the Volkswagen, Audi, and Bentley models after a hearing that is being held on July 22.
The situation in South Korea, though, is already poor for Volkswagen. Sales have slumped 33% in the first half of this year, after Volkswagen admitted in the US to using a software device to falsify emissions tests. Prosecutors there also arrested a local Volkswagen Group executive.
There’s precedent for such a decision, too. Just this year, the ministry ordered the suspension of sales of the Qashqai after accusing Nissan of manipulating its emission control system. The automaker has responded with a lawsuit.
Volkswagen’s South Korean wing told Automotive News that it would decide how to respond after the ministry has made its decision.
