VW Group Terminates Rupert Stadler’s Contract

Volkswagen Group has announced that Audi Chair Rupert Stadler’s contract has been terminated with the automaker.

Stadler is currently in jail after being taken into custody by prosecutors in Munich. They suspected the then-current Audi exec of interfering into the criminal probe looking at the automaker’s diesel-emissions cheating. Stadler stepped aside temporarily at that time.

The company has previously stated that he is presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and VW is saying that the termination is a mutual agreement. “Mr Stadler is leaving the companies with immediate effect and will no longer work for the Volkswagen Group. Mr Stadler is doing so because, due to his ongoing pretrial detention, he is unable to fulfil his duties as a member of the board of management and wishes to concentrate on his defence,” the statement read. He will no longer be on the board of either the VW Group or Audi.

Rupert Stadler began working for Audi in 1990 as has been part of the Volkswagen Group ever since. He was made chair of Audi on Jan 1, 2007.

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday.
