The updated Audi R8 has made its official debut, bringing a raft of changes including a powerful new R8 Performance model.
With this update, Audi has split the R8 range into two models: the standard 570 hp version and the 612 hp R8 Performance.
The R8 Performance replaces the outgoing R8 V10 Plus, which formerly served as the more powerful R8 variant. It’s up 10 hp on the Plus and is also faster, boasting a top speed of 201 mph. The R8 Performance Spyder, meanwhile, will clock in at 200 mph. The Performance coupe will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.1s, while the Spyder can do the same dance in 3.2s.
Updated styling attempts to enhance the R8’s desirability. The facelift includes a new, more aggressive front fascia, a larger rear diffuser, new side skirts and new LED headlights and taillights. New wheels and other options should be in store as well, with more information expected to be released at a later date.
[See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com]Audi has rolled out the new R8 and R8 Performance shortly after showings its new R8 GT3 Evo race car at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The R8 and its GT3 racecar variant now look more alike than ever and that’s no coincidence, Audi says.
“With around 50 percent shared parts with the R8 LMS GT3 and even 60 percent with the R8 LMS GT4, no other automobile is so close to motor racing as the R8,” Audi Sport boss Oliver Hoffman said.
Audi says the 2019 R8 and R8 Performance will go on sale in Europe in 2019. The gallery above is for the Euro-spec model, with the US-spec model likely set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show late next month. We should have more information in regards to US availability, pricing and options at that time.
