Find Of The Day: Small Bumpers, Big-Style GLI

This week’s Find of the Day comes to us from the Longhorn state. We are happy to share with our Vortex audience, a stunningly clean 1989 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V. Read more below, but ask yourself: are you into small or big?

If you didn’t already know, there’s a large and very passionate MK2 Jetta and Golf fanbase. When you research the second-gen models, you quickly learn there are two distinct versions of these cars. No, not standard models and GLIs/GTIs. And no, not automatic and manual models. The thing that MK2 fangirls and fanboys center their love or hate around are bumpers. Yes: bumpers. You see, early MK2s came with slim Euro-style bumpers and later models had large more smoothly integrated bumpers. And the MK2-siasts (TRADEMARK!) entrench themselves pretty firmly in the small bumper or big bumper camps. More on this in a minute.

What you’re looking at is a 1989 Jetta GLI with the high-revving 1.8L 16-valve engine. It’s in very good condition. The grey velour Recaro seats look almost brand new, the dash has just a few cracks, and even the A/C works.

Outside this GLI doesn’t show its age. There’s not a speck of rust on it. The seller even includes photos of the unblemished undercarriage. The paint is shiny, and only some of the badging shows wear.

Modifications are attractive and minimal. The car sits on (unnamed) coilovers and rolls on 15″ MT16 wheels. It has some aftermarket taillights, smoked front fender turn signals, and a Lemerz exhaust. This car is ready for the next Radwood or Cars and Coffee.

But back to the bumpers. The interesting thing here is 1989 is the last year for the small bumpers, according to A2 Resource. And Volkswagen ditched the red stripes opting for black inserts, probably in preparation for the revised 1990 model. The “big bumper” Jetta would have no trim strip in the bumpers at all, opting for a “smoother” look.

But fret not! If you want to buy this small bumper sports sedan, but your fragile ego simply has to have the bigger ones, the seller has a set that can be included in the sale.

This 1989 Jetta GLI 16V can be seen in McAllen, Texas, and they’re asking $6500. Take a look at the ad on thesamba.com.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything. There’s room for one car there and you’re blind.” Fourteen more cars would eventually crash into the corner c

The First of its Kind: Integrated Engineering Releases Highly-Anticipated IE450T MK6 Golf R Turbo Kit

After two long years of development, the team at Integrated Engineering has finally announced the release of their IE450T kit for the MK6 Golf R. With their turbo kit bolted on right out of the box, the sport AWD hatch is transformed into a 450bhp monster, with hardly any noticeable increase in spool time. In fact, 435 ft-lbs of torque are achieved at all four wheels, at a mere 3300rpm! By now you are probably asking yourself how this is even possible on a 2.0L engine that made nearly half that power from the factory. By employing true twin-scroll technology into the cast turbo manifold and pairing it with a state-of-the-art BorgWarner EFR turbocharger, IE was able to keep spool time at a minimum and bring the fastest-spooling big turbo setup to the market. “We wanted to offer a kit that would dramatically increase the power output without making the car lose its amazing street-friendly drivability,” mentioned one of the IE engineers. We are told the IE450T leaves the car driving jus
