Find Of The Day: Pure Power Jetta

This week’s Find Of The Day is not a rolling classic, or a well-maintained rare trim level, or even a low-mileage grandma-just-drove-it-to-church time capsule. Nope. This one is all about power. Pure balls-to-the-wall power. If you’re looking for something to tear up the drag strip, this 2003 Jetta (Jetta!?) could be just the car for you.

When you think of powerful Volkswagens, the Jetta probably is not tops on your list. Maybe Golf Rs, or R32s, or V10 TDI Touaregs, but the Jetta!? Well, VWVortex member SickVR6A2 has taken a 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition to the extreme.  He estimates the car is making between 350 and 370 horsepower. And he thinks it can make over 400 with more tuning.

Where does all this power come from? Take one look under the hood and you’ll see copious upgrades. The star here is the large Precision Turbo & Engine 3231E turbocharger. We won’t go into all the details (there’s just way too much on this car), but highlights include an ABD Racing intake manifold, Eurojet turbo-back exhaust, upgraded injectors, upgraded camshafts, and much much more. A 6-speed transmission replaces the original 5, and it includes a beefed-up clutch to handle all that power.

Enhancements aren’t limited to the engine bay. The car sits on Raceland coilovers and it rolls on 18″ Porsche Twist alloy wheels. There are OEM GLI front and rear valences. And the front bumper is modified to force air to the large intercooler.

Have we mentioned he’s only asking $5800? If this Jetta is making 350HP, that’s only about $16 per horsie.

What’s the drawback, you ask? The big issue with this pure-power Jetta is the interior: there isn’t much of one. The seats, door panels, and door cards are all gone. There’s no heat since the heater core is bypassed. So while it’s fun to think of terrorizing unsuspecting drivers with this almost-sleeper, it’s not exactly a daily driver.

You can check out the car in-person in Winstead, Connecticut. Or take a look at the ad in our classifieds.

Watch: The Story of the Ads that Made VW Big in America

The ads for the original Beetle are almost as famous and well-loved as the Beetle itself. Looking back now it’s easy to forget, though, just how easily things could have wrong. A new short from Dial M Films tracks the history of those early Volkswagen ads that sold America on the people’s car. The story, of course, begins with the visionary agency that made the ads: Doyle Dane Bernach (DDB). As a popular agency for Jewish products, no agency was more aware of the implications of Volkswagen, and no one, it seems, was more skeptical of the brand than DDB. “Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads?” from Dial M Films on Vimeo . William Bernbach, though, was adament that the firm take the client, probably as a way of attracting other lucrative automotive clients. Saddled with a client that he didn’t want, art director Helmut Krone says in the film that he originally came up with ads that were all wrong. Krone tried to do what other manufacturers did and was intent on selling the Beetle ...

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...
