Wörthersee 2015: ŠKODA Fabia Combi R5 Concept Promises to Pack ’Em In

ŠKODA previewed the second of their Wörthersee concept vehicles earlier today, and this one is sure to make a big impact at the event.  Starting off with their new Fabia Combi, and adding a healthy amount of pieces from their motorsport parts bin, the R5 is the all-wheel-drive, sequential shifting wagon of our dreams.

  • Fabia Combi R5 to make debut at mid-May GTI meeting
  • ŠKODA reinterprets its new rally car as an estate
  • Follows ŠKODA Fabia R5’s spectacular opening in Czech Rally Championships

Mladá Boleslav, 7 May 2015 – The new ŠKODA Fabia R5 caused a sensation at its first ever race, with the ŠKODA team bringing home a clear victory from the new model’s world premiere in the Šumava Klatovy Rally. Now the high-tech racer will be presented as an estate show car at the 34th GTI meeting at Wörthersee (13 to 16 May 2015). ŠKODA will also be presenting the ŠKODA Fabia R5 alongside three other sports cars.

As many as 200,000 tuning and motorsport enthusiasts will be making the pilgrimage to Wörthersee in Austria between 13 and 16 May to indulge in their passion for fast cars. This will be ŠKODA’s sixth appearance at the GTI meeting, where the brand will be presenting five sporty models.

ŠKODA’s designers have reinterpreted the Fabia R5 as an estate model to create the ŠKODA Fabia R5 Combi show car. The green, white and black ŠKODA Fabia R5 Combi will be driving onto the stage on 18-inch alloys. At the front, a powerful bumper and wide air intakes signify the car’s rallying ambitions. The wide contoured grille is finished in black, as are the door mirror covers. Flared mudguards and powerful doorsills accentuate the model’s racy appearance.

The rear sports a huge spoiler, as well as a giant rear bumper, and a wide central exhaust pipe. Beneath the surface, the Fabia R5 features an ultra-modern 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, all-wheel-drive, sequential five-speed transmission and McPherson struts.

ŠKODA will also be showing the ‘original’ ŠKODA Fabia R5 at Wörthersee. ŠKODA’s brand new racing car celebrated its dazzling world premiere at the end of April with a triumphant victory at the opening of this year’s Czech Rally Championship. Driven by the Asia-Pacific Champion Jan Kopecky (CZ), the car proved to be both fast and reliable. The Fabia R5 is based on ŠKODA’s new production Fabia, and is the successor to the Fabia Super 2000, which went down as the most successful rally car in ŠKODA’s history.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
