In his latest video, /Drive host and noted wordsmith Mike Spinelli spends some time with Volkswagen’s latest GTI at VIR, coming away with a new word to describe the ethos behind the GTI and models like it. As he describes it, ‘Germanicity’ is the ability to continuously improve on an already stellar idea, without sacrificing the comfort, power or capability of previous iterations. While Mike does note that the latest GTI feels more grown up than previous offerings, we can’t say that this is necessarily a bad thing.
Mike isn’t the only one to be singing the praises of the Mk7, as the car has earned quite a collection of accolades around the world, but does mention that upcoming vehicles from other manufacturers like Ford will test the merit of Wolfsburg’s latest. And it’s a valid point, but as the GTI was the catalyst for the term ‘hot hatch’, we’re confident that Volkswagen will keep the competitors at bay.
