Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Wings for Life World Run

Ogier, Latvala and the Volkswagen Rally4Life team took part in Munich

Rivals in the FIA World Rally Championship, but partners for a good cause, Sébastien Ogier (F) and Jari-Matti Latvala (FIN) both entered the Wings for Life World Run in Munich. The two rally aces were accompanied by the Volkswagen Rally4Life team comprising team members and interested parties who responded to Volkswagen Motorsport’s appeal. The run got under way for the more than 70,000 entrants in 33 countries around the world at 13:00 Central European Summer Time. And rather than aiming for a physical finishing line, the runners had to run as far as they could before being caught by the ‘catcher car’. The proceeds of the event held under the motto of ‘Running for those who can’t’ will be donated to the spinal cord research of Wings for Life (www.wingsforlife.com) backed by Red Bull. The entrants in Munich included German actor Matthias Schweighöfer, luge Olympic champion Felix Loch and biathlete Miriam Gössner.

Fourth place for Heikkinen in Hockenheim, Kristoffersson misses out on final

In the second race of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Hockenheim, the Swedish world RX team Marklund Motorsport finished in fourth place with the Finn Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen. All three Volkswagen RX Supercars of Marklund Motorsport qualified for the first semi-final on the rallycross course integrated into the Grand Prix track at Hockenheim. In the end, Per-Gunnar ‘P-G’ Andersson (S) finished in twelfth place, while US guest entrant Tanner Foust, who otherwise competes in Global Rallycross for Andretti Motorsport, came ninth. Johan Kristoffersson (S) of Volkswagen Team Sweden, who won the season opener in Montalegre, Portugal, likewise made it into the semi-final, but finished in fifth place and failed to secure a spot in the final. The next event in the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Mettet, Belgium, on 15 to 17 May will also be the first race of the FIA European Rallycross Championship in which Marklund Motorsport will enter a Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar for the Norwegian star Tommy Rustad.

Wins for up-and-coming Volkswagen drivers Leclerc and Giovinazzi in Hockenheim

Charles Leclerc (MC) and Antonio Giovinazzi (I) were the winners for Volkswagen over the second weekend of racing in the Formula 3 European Championship in Hockenheim (D). Leclerc of Monaco pulled a win out of the bag on Sunday, while the Italian Giovinazzi, who is ‘powered by Volkswagen’, scored his first win of the season in the first race on Friday. As such, Giovinazzi has secured a spot on the podium in every race of the season so far. Up-and-coming drivers with 225 hp engines made in Wolfsburg racked up a tally of six podium places and 15 top ten finishes in Hockenheim. The next weekend of racing will be held in Pau, France, on 15 to 17 May, and promises to be a thrilling affair, with Giovinazzi on 106 points overall – a mere five points ahead of Leclerc on 101.

Oulton Park: Walker-Tully follows first win up with more success

Jack Walker-Tully (GB) was the man of the moment on Sunday. The local hero scored not just one, but two wins on the second weekend of racing in the Volkswagen Racing Cup UK in Rockingham. Walker-Tully won the third race ahead of Joe Fulbrook (GB) and Aaron Mason (GB). Beforehand, he had scored his first ever win in the second race after two years of trying, pipping Mason (GB), Jason Tingle (GB) and overall leader David Sutton (GB) to the post. Not even the extremely wet conditions and a starting position in the fourth row were able to hold Walker-Tully back. He had already moved up to fourth place by the end of the first lap, and he continued to work his way to the front during the rest of the race. Sutton achieved a commanding start-to-finish victory in the first race on Saturday, to rack up his third win of the season, following two wins at the season opener in Oulton Park. Last year’s champion Joe Fulbrook (GB) came second, followed by Joe McMillan (GB) in third place. The next races will be held in Silverstone from 30 to 31 May.

First win for ComToYou – tricky conditions in Dijon-Prenois

The team ComToYou with Dominique Bustin/Robert Olivier/François Verbist (B/B/B) clinched its first win during the second weekend of racing in the Volkswagen Fun Cup Belgium in Dijon-Prenois. The trio beat the Allure Team 2 drivers (Bolle/Mondron/Caprasse) in light rain but predominantly dry track conditions on Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the first race in Bourgogne, France, was characterised by tough conditions and heavy rain, which made it difficult for the drivers to keep their vehicle on the track. There were five safety car interventions and another accident before the red flag was eventually waved, bringing the race to a premature end. The win was assigned to Sébastien Rhyon/Alix Fraiture (B/B, AC Motorsport 2), followed by Allure Team 1 (Bouvy/Donniacuo/Olivier) in second place and Acome Racing (Nava-Charlier-Vanhakendover) in third place.

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...

Watch: The Story of the Ads that Made VW Big in America

The ads for the original Beetle are almost as famous and well-loved as the Beetle itself. Looking back now it’s easy to forget, though, just how easily things could have wrong. A new short from Dial M Films tracks the history of those early Volkswagen ads that sold America on the people’s car. The story, of course, begins with the visionary agency that made the ads: Doyle Dane Bernach (DDB). As a popular agency for Jewish products, no agency was more aware of the implications of Volkswagen, and no one, it seems, was more skeptical of the brand than DDB. “Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads?” from Dial M Films on Vimeo . William Bernbach, though, was adament that the firm take the client, probably as a way of attracting other lucrative automotive clients. Saddled with a client that he didn’t want, art director Helmut Krone says in the film that he originally came up with ads that were all wrong. Krone tried to do what other manufacturers did and was intent on selling the Beetle ...

Watch: The Zerouno Cruis’n USA

ItalDesign is drumming up excitement for its new supercar based around the same 5.2-liter Audi V10 that powers the R8. Naturally, it hit the road for a cruise around California last week to celebrate Monterey Car Week. There isn’t much in the way of V10 noise—which is a real shame given the sound it makes—but you do at least get a good look at the car inside and out in this video. With a body made entirely of carbon fiber and designed to be as aerodynamic and light as possible, ItalDesign figures that it will be good for a 0-60 time of just 3.2 seconds. “We put it our best skills into the production of the first car,” said Massimo Bovi, head of pre-series production, when the Zerouno was first unveiled in Geneva earlier this year. “Using some of the finest productions methods and engaging our high-skilled workers.” The car features clever aero tricks gleaned from single-seat racing, like a y-duct up front to improve downforce and turn-in. Available in a number of trim levels, the...
