Find of the Day: The Plaid Cad’ on Bags

We all know that the GTI’s tartan seats looks great, but did you know that plaid is a great pattern for any Golf? Hm? Well, now you do, because this Caddy on air ride suspension not only looks great, it’s our find of the day. That means that you, too, could benefit from all the best right angles of the ‘70s (inside and out). Despite starting out as, it seems, a Canadian gas-powered car, the plaid Caddy now runs a rebuilt 1.6-liter diesel engine paired to a turbo allegedly making 8 lbs of boost. Running through a 5-speed manual with TT short shift kit, the plaid Caddy should feel pretty spritely. Scott Speed and the VW Beetle are the First Ever Amercas Rallycross Champions

Scott Speed today earned his fourth straight rallycross driver’s championship title, taking the inaugural season of the Americas Rallycross series. The series, which takes over from the now-defunct Red Bull Global Rallycross, had a four-event season, which Speed led coming into the final race weekend at Austin, Texas’s Circuit of the Americas. Scott’s main competition came from his Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammate, Tanner Foust, who was in second place. And although Foust won the event this weekend’s final race, Speed had earned enough points over the course of this weekend to be guaranteed the title if he started the weekend’s final heat. The Beetles finished first and second ahead of Loenbro Hoonigan’s Steve Arpin in a Ford and two Subarus. The one-two finish in the race and, indeed, the driver’s championship will be familiar to anyone who has kept up with American rallycross racing in the last couple of years. Having won the final three seasons of Red Bull Global Rallycr

Audi Development Boss Steps Down Due to Health Concerns

Peter Mertens, Audi’s newly hired head of development, is stepping down from his role at the company for health reasons. “We deeply regret that Peter Mertens is stepping down,” said VW CEO Herbert Diess. “We respect the reasons that led to his decision and wish him a full recovery.” Mertens will be succeeded by Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler on November 1. He has been with the VW Group since 1986 and has in his time with the company been the Head of Vehicle Development at Skoda, a member of the board of management for technical development at Bentley, and more. “Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler has gained a great deal of experience in his numerous responsible positions at the Group, which will help him to make a start quickly in his new position at Audi,” said Diess. “His task will be to continue the transformation of Technical Development and to further advance along the path towards electric mobility.” Mertens’ sudden departure follows his missing the launch of the e-tron earlier this month.

Watch: 900 KG Mk2 with Hayabusa Heads Makes 400 HP at 11,000 RPM

Motorsport regulations are great because they occasionally create deeply weird and inventive interpretations. This Mk2 Golf, for instance, races in Hill Climbing’s E1-2000 class and somebody decided that the obvious best solution was a Hayabusa engine. That’s a little odd since a Mk2 engine would fit within the 2000cc limits laid out by the rules, but that doesn’t leave much space for forced induction. You see, the rules in hill climbing account for turbocharging, multiplying their engine’s displacement by 1.7 times. So Franz Pobst decided that the natural solution was to stick Hayabusa heads onto a KR block (combining for 1170cc of displacement) and boosting it up to 400 hp at 11,000 rpm with a Garrett turbo. Despite sending power to all four wheels, the car still tips the scales at just 900 kg (a little less than 2,000 lbs). Built in 2017, the car continued to evolve through 2018, earning its first class victory this year at the Voitsberg Hillclimb, in its home country of Austria

Dirt Rally 2.0 is Coming and the Ad is Consumed by VWs

As much as I’m aware that VW has a history in rallying, it isn’t the first Volkswagen Group brand I think about when the topic of driving quickly on dirt comes up. The makers of Dirt Rally 2.0 disagree. Although the Audi Quattro does finish the video well, the rally game’s first trailer opens with a GTI and then moves on to a rallycross Polo GTI (and then an Audi S1 Quattro). Although the game splits its time evenly between VWs and Audis (with a brief, ill-advised Ford interlude) that’s still notable for a game that fetishes the rough stuff. Consider us first in line for this game when it comes out on February 26, 2019. New Porsche 935 Track Car is Absolutely Bonkers

Porsche has outdone itself this time. The German automaker presented a new track-only creation based on the 911 GT2 RS at the Rennsport Reunion VI at Laguna Seca today called the 935. The vehicle is a modern-day recreation of the legendary 935 Moby Dick – a massively turbocharged take on the 1978 930 911 with an elongated tail designed specifically for the long straights and continuous bends of Le Mans. Powering this track-only beast is a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat six making 700 hp, which is paired with a seven-speed PDK transmission. It also gets massive iron brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear, built-in air jacks, a 115-liter fuel tank and a roll cage. The body, which has been widened and lengthened considerably, is made of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polymer and integrates a massive rear wing for untold amounts of downforce. Aero enhanced wheels inspired by the 935 enhance the exterior look, along with the endplate LED light

The Jetta GLI’s Argentine Sister Spotted Under Little Camouflage

The news keeps coming out of Argentina following the reveal of its version of the Jetta, the Vento. This time, Autoblog Argentina has secured pictures of the GLI version of the car under very little camouflage. The pictures, submitted by Luis R.A., show at least two vehicles both sporting (what look like) 18” Dallas alloy wheels. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The interior shot also shows leather Top Sport seats and an automatic transmission (if we were a betting site we’d put our money on DSG). Behind the steering wheel, you can also see VW’s fancy new digital cockpit, which places this car at the pretty high up in VW’s content hierarchy. We also know that the new GLI will toss the 1.4 for a 2.0-liter engine, like the Golf GTI. The regular Jetta’s rear torsion beam suspension also gets the heave-ho in favor of a much sportier multi-link suspension. As Autoblog Argentina’s talk with Jetta designer Jose Carlos Pavone suggested, we expect the GLI to launch early next year

Watch: Bugatti Chiron Drag Race 1,300 HP Audi S4

The Bugatti Chiron and it’s 1,500 hp make it undeniably quick, but you don’t often see them on the drag strip. Maybe that’s because they’re too quick for that small run, but maybe it’s because they’re afraid of losing? Check out this race between a Chiron and an Audi S4. Ok, this isn’t a plain S4. It’s one that the poster says makes somewhere around 1,300 hp. In the S4 that’s a massive amount of horsepower. It’s a rolling race, which is a much better idea for CV joints and gearboxes, with both cars launching from 50 km/h. So who wins the race? You’ll have to watch and see. Oh, the Bugatti shows up around the minute mark. The post Watch: Bugatti Chiron Drag Race 1,300 HP Audi S4 appeared first on VWVortex . from VWVortex https://ift.tt/2OVhJHh via IFTTT

Traction Control: How Does it Work?

Traction control. For most drivers, it’s great in the snow, great in the rain, and great on the pavement. For enthusiasts, it’s terrible pretty much everywhere. Or at least it used to be until automakers started taking it seriously. Back in the old days, traction control meant a sensitive right foot. But there was only so much that could do for many drivers. So in 1971, Buick launched MaxTrac. Designed by GM’s AC division, MaxTrac was the very first traction control system and it debuted on the beautiful 1971 Riviera. It works almost exactly the same as a modern traction control system, but with a little less modern technology. Make that a lot less. The MaxTrac system used a transmission speed sensor, a front wheel speed sensor, an electric controller and an on-off switch. The transmission sensor measured rear wheel speed through the speedometer cable connection. Quick and easy. It turned rear wheel speed into an electrical signal, refreshing the speed at 25 times a second per mile

British Readers: Do You Want to Buy Jeremy Clarkson’s GTI?

The GTI is an undeniably good car. So good that even millionaire stars of automotive-themed TV shows buy them. And now’s your chance to buy one of theirs. Perhaps the most notorious automotive figure…     …     … in the world. Jeremy Clarkson is selling his 2015 Golf GTI and now’s your chance to buy it for £21,500 ($28,335), which according to our research is pretty much right, if a bit dear. Other GTIs with DSG and four doors can be found for a little less than £20,000, but none have quite this provenance. This one comes with the POWEEEEEEEER pack, though, so it may be worth the premium. Clarkson is uncharacteristically laconic about his car, here, sharing little else. But you can find out how he feels about GTIs generally in his Sunday Times review. Check it out on DriveTribe and get in touch with us if you do end up buying it. We’d love to pay to have you take it to Manlove to see what we can find buried deep in the carpet of Clarkson’s car. Arteon’s American Release Delayed Due to European Emissions Certification

The release of Volkswagen’s flagship sedan will be delayed several months in America as a result of a production backlog in Europe. The Arteon will hit dealer floors in early 2019 instead of late 2018, as was expected. The problem comes as a result “of delays in the certification process caused by a backlog in meeting WLTP worldwide emissions testing, ” a spokesperson told Automotive News . The Arteon replaces and improves upon the now gone CC. With an elegant, sloping roofline, the car is based on the same MQB platform that sits under everything from the Golf to the Atlas. Benefitting from a 268 hp version of the 2.0-liter four-pot—the chassis also fits the V6—the Arteon is supposed to raise the bar for luxury and performance from the VW brand. European reviews of the Arteon have already come in and despite being good, they aren’t great, complaining that the car looks better than it drives. More Evidence that the Jetta GLI will Debut in Detroit

The Jetta’s Argentinian sister, the Vento, just launched in Puerto Madero and with its launch comes further proof that the Jetta GLI will launch at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Although we already knew that the GLI was launching in the first quarter of 2019, and while we would have bet that a Detroit launch was likely, this is just another exhibit in the case for Detroit. The information comes from Autoblog Argentina , which spoke to Jetta designer Jose Carlos Pavone at the event. “I estimate that [Jetta] GLI could be presented in January, during the Detroit Show,” Pavone told Autoblog . “The sports version was specifically designed for the tastes of the North American market.” Pavone went on to describe of the GLI’s sporty details. “It will be much more aggressive and sporty, with some red lines, like the Golf GTi. It will also have specific design five-spoke wheels and black roof,” he explained. “Not painted black, like the previous Vento GLi. Here it will be black, but bec

Ratty Rescue: …Jumps Over to the Lazy Blue Dog

Exhibit A: it is a wagon and that’s the coolest body shape. Exhibit B: it’s a two-door wagon, the secret, actual coolest body style. Exhibit C: it’s a Fox, which a lot of people don’t know about and which makes it cooler, because the measure of coolness is exclusivity. Exhibit D: no power steering for better connection to the road. Exhibit E: Jamie Orr’s excellent non-wagon Fox. Exhibit F: Geometric perfection. Exhibit G: it’s called the Fox, which is an excellent name. Thank you for your attention. I think we can all agree that I’ve convinced you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Fox

Report: R8 RWS to Survive Coming Facelift

There’s very little good news to be had about the R8 these days. Between the evidence of its demise, rumors of its transformation into an EV super-hyper-dupercar, and Audi’s overall disinterest in the project, we’ll take any good V10 news we can get. And this latest piece is actually pretty good. The love that Audi has gotten for its RWS rear-wheel-drive R8 has reportedly convinced it that the project is worth continuing past the refresh later this year. This is good news because the lighter, rawer, decidedly non-quattro R8 was the brainchild of the Bugatti’s current CEO. So his departure could easily have made the current RWS both the first and the last. But marketing manager Linda Kurz told Autocar (which is normally not the most reliable source, but has gone to the trouble of quoting someone here) that the RWS was “a great success” and that a followup is “something that we are looking into” after its facelift. And that’s the first bit of good news for enthusiasts in 452 days, a

Stories from the Salt: Back After Blowing an Engine

As you May have heard, VW set a very specific record with the brand new Jetta that meant it went over 210 mph. Kindly, VW offered to fly us out for the record attempt and while we were there we talked to some of the VW owners who were around for the racing—normally that’s the part where we arbitrarily say that these are the coolest cars at X, Y, or Z, but forget it, everything and everyone at Bonneville is the coolest. Watch: Chris Harris Pulls a Golf R’s Handbrake at Speed to See What Happens

Among the many excellent features of the Golf R, a good ol’ fashioned handbrake does not count. It’s sad, but so is polio and apparently we’re willing to overlook that in pursuit of things that make “instinctive sense.” But the nice thing about a mechanical connection is that it’s predictable. A lever only ever does one thing (unless it’s broken when it does one other thing: nothing). It may be limiting, but it’s also useful. Digital connections allow for all kinds of intricate details to be added, even if they aren’t always evident to the end user. Yes, like a Microsoft program, there are all kinds of features included in VW’s electronic handbrake that you’ll probably never know about. Thank goodness for Chris Harris, then. Beneficiary of an empty track and some left over hockey equipment, he set out to find out what happens if you pull an electronic handbrake at (German) highway speeds. The answer is, as you might expect, sensible. Rather than locking up a back wheel (as in the

Help Fire Up This Lego Quattro

If that prototype Quattro just below on the front page is a little too much, or maybe you just don’t have the garage space, then this might be more up your alley. Lego’s latest product idea is a replica of the Audi Sport Quattro that won Pikes Peak in 1987. The Pikes Peak was a bit of a last gasp for the Sport Quattro. After the Group B ruleset it was designed to dominate ended abruptly in 1986, the company still wanted somewhere to race. It had already won on the Race to the Clouds in 1985, so why not go again. The 1987 car was driven by Walter Rohrl. With at least 600 hp from the 2.1L turbo five – at sea level at least – the car stormed to the to the fastest. This Lego Ideas entrant reproduces that. While many of the ideas featured are designed on a computer, this one was made by hand. The old fashioned way. Brick by brick. It does a pretty great job of capturing the silhouette and the idea of the Quattro in racer form. It even has the right stickers and graphics. Or at least,

Watch: Leno Drives a Very Silly Cop Car

In 1979 the German city of Wurzburg needed a police car and naturally they chose a car that made double-digit power. The most stereotypical car in Germany. Why the Polizei chose this car is hard to fathom (the Golf was out at this point) but hey, it’s fun. This particular car has some great provenance, too, because the more eagle eyed among you may have recognized it from Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. That’s because its current owner, the improbably named Spike Ferestein, bought it from that lover of all things air-cooled, Jerry Seinfeld. The people surrounding this car, though, Seinfeld, Ferestein, Leno give a hint of what it perhaps this car’s greatest feature: unbridled amusement. It’s a silly car that attracts mirth wherever it goes. In fact, Ferestein says that it’s the car he picks to take his kids to birthday parties, because it’s so much fun. And isn’t that something we all want more of? The post Watch: Leno Drives a Very Silly Cop Car appeared first on VWVortex . f

Find of the Day: The Quick Brown Fox

Why would anyone buy a two door wagon? It makes no earthly sense. The point of a wagon is to be practical, and then you take out arguably the most practical feature of the car. So why buy a two door wagon? Because it’s rad. This 88 Volkswagen Fox is rocking a 2.0-liter Audi Bubble block bottom end with a 1.8-liter GTI head, and a 268 TT cam. It’s all running through a 4-speed manual trans and because of the Fox’s inexpensive nature it doesn’t have power steering, either, making this an even more old school, analog experience than it looks. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The Fox rolls on lovely golden Enkei Apache wheels, that are connected to the rest of the car via FK Silverline coilovers and Mk2 spindles and brakes. It also has Hella projector headlights and and smoked taillights to complete the look. And it’s all selling for just $2,200 in Philadelphia. According to the seller, it was an impulse buy and now they need space, so they’re passing it along, though they adm

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Head to Nitro World Games

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross is getting ready to enter the Nitro World Games this weekend. The event, held in Salt Lake City, is adding rallycross for the first time. The Nitro Rallycross competition won’t affect the Americas Rallycross standings, but that doesn’t mean that the drivers sitting one-two in that championship will be taking it easy at this event. Scott Speed and Tanner Foust will both be looking to put their name on the new trophy. This is an all-out, go-for-broke situation,” said Speed. “This race doesn’t pay points, so it’s all about going for the win, especially when you have some of the top drivers out there competing for the trophy.” The course layout was designed by Travis Pastrana is has banked corners, multiple joke lap options – including the intersection of a tunnel, tabletop jump and gap jump. Foust said that “just looking at the track map, you can tell that this event is going to be insane. It’s a different challenge to what we normally face, and I think

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL w/4Motion Review – Crossover Done Well

Many crossovers are really just tall wagons, and the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan looks the part. It has a boxy overall shape with angles and curves mixed in. Drop its ride height, and it’s a wagon. Fine. That’s sort of the point – crossovers promise the utility of wagons with a taller seating position. We’ve been over this before. Getting a crossover to stand out requires a little extra effort, beyond just being a tall wagon. In the case of the Tiguan, Volkswagen remembered that it’s the same company that makes the Golf/Golf GTI, and has the MQB platform available for use in underpinning its compact crossover. Unlike the larger, bulkier Atlas, which also shares the platform but is  tuned for comfort  – the Tiguan makes better use of the sportier aspects of its platform. I credit light and lively steering for some of this. Yes, light steering is usually lambasted as being a detriment, mostly due to lack of feel, but it works here, and it’s just heavy enough to remind you of its connection

Original Equipment Tire Marks: How do they Work?

Take a look at those tires on your new car or truck. Look at the markings. No, not the usual ones, like P265/35/19, or the DOT ones. Those are on every tire and just mean the size and age. I mean the other ones. Like the N on a new Porsche. Or the TPC that adorns nearly every new GM vehicle. AO on Audi, F on Ferrari, and even VO on some Volkswagens. Those codes tell you that you’re looking at a manufacturer approved tire. But how does that work? And do you need them? Tires are a huge part of your car or truck. And not just for keeping the wheels off of the ground. Acceleration, braking, handling, steering feel, road noise, fuel economy. They’re all areas where the tire can play an absolutely massive role. Picking the wrong rubber can result in more than a 20 percent decrease in fuel economy, make the car nearly too noisy to drive, ruin stability, and generally make your day miserable behind the wheel. And yes, those are all things we’ve experienced with a bad tire choice. So it’s ess

Porsche Invests in Augmented Reality Head up Displays

Porsche has invested in technology startup WayRay, which specializes in augmented reality head up displays for automobiles.   The German automaker is now a strategic lead investor in WayRay following the company’s Series C funding round, along with JVCKenwood and Hyundai. WayRay, which was founded by Russian businessman Vitaly Onomarev, is a leading developer of holographic augmented reality technologies. Its head up display system for cars is significantly smaller than other such systems on the market today and can also project more elaborate and detailed shapes and images. As you can tell from the mock-up images in the gallery, one of the ways Porsche envisions using the system is for driver coaching, displaying a ghost car and a virtual racing line on a racetrack for the driver – just like if they were playing Gran Turismo. Automakers could also such a system for relaying relevant information to the driver when they are out on public streets as well. For example, it could display

I Want the I.D. Buzz Cargo Concept More than I.D. Buzz for Some Reason

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover this week, showing another electric variant based on its MEB platform and it’s the coolest. The I.D. Buzz Cargo trades the surfboards for digitalized cargo solutions. The biggest difference, as with any delivery van, is that back windows have been removed. The Buzz Cargo also extends a little farther back over the back wheels to add extra cargo capacity, making 199 inches long, 78 inches wide, and 77 inches tall. But the differences are more than skin deep. The concept promises, er… “extremely good space.” Look, it’s a perfectly cromulent quote, because VW does more than embiggen the Buzz. Up front, you get a screen that utilizes the *sigh* internet of things to keep track of cargo. In concert with electrified shelves, delivery people can request an item from the front seat and have it ready at the door when they open the cargo bay door. The Buzz Cargo also offers automated driving 205 miles of rang

Ratty Rescue: One “Seriosly” Nice GTI

Want to but your own supercharged MK1 GTI, but you’re short on funds? Check out today’s Ratty Rescue. This 1983 Volkswagen GTI is the perfect canvas to build your own hotted-up hatch. Just make sure you’re serios. Finding a decent MK1 GTI is getting more and more difficult. Most of these little bunnies are in phenomenal shape or complete basket cases. Today’s Ratty Rescue is somewhere in between. To start, this car is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Not a bad place to source a project car from. The photos aren’t great, but the body appears to be straight, and there’s no rust visible. Heck, the engine bay looks pretty darn clean for a 35-year-old car.
