The next member of the all-electric Volkswagen ID family is set to premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. VW describes the new model as “a multi-functional vehicle for a new era,” but the teaser pictures make it look remarkably like a microbus.
Volkswagen is otherwise being tight lipped about the new vehicle, but has revealed that it will be based on the MEB platform. Unlike the ID, though, this concept will have two electric motors to power all four wheels.
Like the ID, the Detroit concept features a suite of connectivity features as well as the eventual capacity for autonomous driving. Press the VW logo on the steering wheel and the car takes over, with the wheel folding away into the dash to free up more space in the cabin.
Although VW isn’t calling this the microbus or the TE, the automaker has drawn links to the original microbus, calling this latest concept a link “between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future.”
