South Korean officials say they are filing a criminal complaint against Volkswagen’s Korean wing fine the company the equivalent of $37 million for false advertising in the wake of the emissions scandal that rocked the automaker.
The fine sets a new record in false advertising cases in South Korea. This more bad news for the automaker that has already suspended sales of most of its models in the country.
The Fair Trade Commission, meanwhile, said that it would ask prosecutors to investigate five current and former executives, including Andre Konsbruck, who is now VP of sales for the Americas at Audi.
The executives could face fines of up to about $130,000 or two years in jail.
Audi Volkswagen Korea “is committed to rebuilding trust with the authorities and with customers and other stakeholders in Korea,” said VW in a statement.
