Representatives from Audi are at the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems showcasing how its vehicles can not only drive themselves, but learn for themselves.
Audi brought with it a scale model of a Q2, endowed by its creators with the power to learn how to park itself. Going from nothing but a command to find a metal parking spot to parking itself from any position, the little Q2 effectively uses trial and error (deep reinforcement learning, if you prefer) to find its way.
The model uses cameras at the front and rear along with 10 ultrasonic sensors to locate itself in space. An onboard computer then turns that information into control signals for steering, throttle, and braking.
Technology similar to this isn’t far off, either, as Audi plans to introduce learning based software in the 2017 A8.
