Report: World Rallycross Championship Going Electric

The World Rallycross Championship will be going electric, according to a new report from Motorsport.com.

“Electric cars will be the world championship. They absolutely, categorically will be the world championship,” a source told the site.

Series promoter IMG said last August that it was working with automakers and the FIA to introduce electric vehicles to world rallycross, but at that time it wasn’t sure when it would happen. It was also expected that the electric rallycross cars would compete separately from gas.

Now it’s expected that EVs will be the competitors in the top championship from 2020. Nine manufacturers are involved in discussions. The new cars are expected to be based on a common chassis that will have manufacturer specific drivetrain and bodywork attached to it.

Interestingly, the source said that the current Rallycross Supercars won’t disappear. “There’s absolutely 100% commitment to keeping the current Supercars and not just as a European championship, as some form of international championship that can race outside Europe if the market dictates.”

Audi and Volkswagen both compete in the series, and Audi has said that it is interested in the electric switch. Audi Sport chief Dieter Gass said that “in the medium run, we hope to see electric cars being fielded in this racing series because electrification is a focus topic at Audi, also in motorsport.”

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday.
