Ratty Rescue: Blank Slate GTI

This week’s Ratty Rescue is an abandoned project. This MK2 GTI has great potential, but in its current state, it’s not going to turn any heads. Can you finish what the current owner started?

This 1986 GTI needs a bit of work to bring it back to its former glory. The good news is the basics are there. But it needs a dedicated owner to either keep the car going down the path the owner started it on, or take it in a completely different direction. It really is a blank-slate car.

Unlike other Ratty Rescues we’ve covered, let’s start with the not-so-good stuff. First, there’s an ABA 2.0 in the engine bay. We’re not sure why. It seems like the owner, VWVortex member joeyyphillips, isn’t sure either as he bought the car with the engine installed. While the 2.0 isn’t a thrill-inducing engine, it does have 115 horsepower compared to the 102 in the original 1.8L 8V engine.

The 5-speed manual transmission allows you to wring out those additional 13 horsies. Second unfortunate item: the 2.0 isn’t running. Third: the bulk of the interior’s been taken out. Fourth: there’s some bubbled paint on the hood. Fifth, the car has been repainted. And last: the original small bumpers aren’t present, but there are ‘big bumpers’ on the car in the photos. Honestly, there’s not much “bad” on this little bunny.

Now for the good items. While it has been resprayed, the new Atlas Gray paint is very attractive and VERY shiny. The car also has a clean CarFax report with no accidents. Up front, there’s a badgeless grille with Euro headlights. Dynamat has been installed in the car. Check out those slick widened MK2 Jetta/Golf steelies with stretched tires. And just like the current owner planned, it’s the perfect candidate for an engine swap. Get the 2.0 running and then sell it to make some cash!

So if you’re in the market for a car that’s more than a rolling shell, but not quite a daily driver, this could be the car for you. Take a look at the ad in our classifieds, or if you’re in the PA/NJ/NY area, check it yourself. VWVortex member joeyyphillips is asking $2900 for this blank slate.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions. Buy back offers are still only expected for the oldest 20,000 of the roughly 80,000 VW Group vehicles sold in America with the 3.0-liter TDI engine. Those vehicles are mostly SUVs, like ...
