The year’s starting off well for Volkswagen. After having earned the title of biggest automaker on earth, VW America reported a sales increase of 17% in the first month of the year.
That amounts to 23,510 total vehicles delivered last month, nearly 3,500 more than in January 2016. That’s not a huge surprise given how fresh the emissions emergency was at this time last year, but with dieselgate still very much in the news, the increase is welcome all the same.
The Tiguan, the Passat, and the Golf family were the big gainers this January, each with sales increases well in the double digits. Sales of the Tiguan rose 39%, while Passat sales rose 64%, and 44% more Golfs were delivered.
Of the members of the Golf family, only the Golf R saw a modest reduction in sales, while the e-Golf (+2%), the GTI (+15%), and the Golf (+23%) all had good months. The SportWagen (+190%) had a phenomenal increase in sales, overtaking the GTI and the base Golf in raw numbers.
The Touareg and the Jetta, on the other hand, didn’t fare well, both selling in smaller numbers than they did a year ago.
