Apple CarPlay Finally Goes Wireless

Drivers will soon be able to connect their iPhones to their cars and use Apple CarPlay wirelessly.

This is a first for the connected car industry, as up until now, Apple CarPlay required the user to plug their phone in through a USB connection. Harman’s technology allows the iPhone to connect via Bluetooth and data transfer via WiFi, providing flexibility between native and CarPlay Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) as well as simultaneous use of head unit functionality and CarPlay integration.

The company said its infotainment system is currently being deployed for a luxury German automaker, which is likely BMW based on the image it included with the press release. BMW announced support for wireless CarPlay late last year and Harman’s announcement comes as the 2017 BMW 5 Series with wireless CarPlay begins arriving dealerships in the U.S.

Harman is a “tier 1” supplier and also works with various other automakers including Audi, Volkswagen, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and more. Although the company hasn’t confirmed it will roll out the technology to other automakers, it’s more than likely we will see it in other vehicles soon. It will be interesting to see if Android Auto follows suit.

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively.
