In recent years, it was understood that everyone’s favorite expression “no replacement for displacement,” didn’t apply to fuel economy. That’s all set to change now at Volkswagen says Herbert Diess.
Speaking to Car Throttle, Volkswagen’s chairman said “The trend of downsizing is over,” adding that “emissions tend to go up as engines get smaller.”
This aligns with what most real world drivers observe in their daily lives. Small, turbocharged engines, though, efficient during testing, tend to drink thirstily in real world scenarios.
Unfortunately for those of us on this side of the Atlantic, the trend will probably take some time to reach our shores, if it does at all. The question was asked in reference to the 1.5-liter engine that has replaced the 1.4-liter TSI engine in the Golf range, which we don’t get here anyway.
Diess also went on to add that even engines we Americans would find tiny will stick around. “We will offer a three-cylinder 1.0-liter which is a very competent engine, but we don’t see any engines below that anymore.”
