When TV’s Richard Rawlings isn’t hosting Discovery Channel’s Fast N’ Loud or selling energy drinks he’s out buying interesting cars, like this 1974 Acapulco Thing.
The Acapulco Things were modeled after a set fleet cars made for the Las Brisas resort in, you guessed it, Acapulco, Mexico. Volkswagen was convinced by customers to make a small batch of the cars for sale to the public.
Volkswagen built only 100 of these brightly colored Things, and this one has had a full pan-off restoration. Over 800 hours of work since 2009 were put into it and that, according to the Gas Monkey Garage website, is what caught Rawlings’ eye.
Rawlings bought the car for $24,200 at Barrett-Jackson’s 2016 Las Vegas auction, held between October 13 and 15.
