Best Weekend Yet for Volkswagen RX Sweden

Despite earning its most points so far this season, this weekend’s Belgian rallycross event was only a qualified success for Volkswagen RX Sweden. Although, the team managed to get both of its FIA Rallycross Championship VW Polo RXs into the final race of the season’s third round, neither car achieved its full potential.

It was a strong showing for young buck, Anton Marklund, who had good pace this weekend and made it into the same semi-final race as his teammate, Johan Kristoffersson.

There, Kristoffersson earned a pretty easy second place in the semi, which got him into the finals. Marklund, meanwhile, got into drag race down the final straight to finish in third, and get himself into his first final of the season.

It was in the final that Marklund gave his best performance of  the season, launching off the start and going wide around the first corner to get into second place from back row. Once there he showed great pace, keeping up with the race leader and eventual winner Mattias Ekstrom. Unfortunately, excitement got the better of him and on the second lap he carried too much speed into a chicane and came out of it in second last place.

Meanwhile, Kristoffersson was limping around the track in last place, having broken his car off the start. The bad luck continues for Kristoffersson, who for the third round in row drove well all weekend only to be let down by a broken car late on Sunday.

Marklund, undaunted by his mistake, raced hard and worked his way back into a healthy fourth place, his best result of the season.

Despite not realizing its full potential, this is still Team Volkswagen RX Sweden’s best round so far, with both drivers getting points in the final race. Following the action in Belgium, the team is in second place with 83 points, leading third place by 6 pts. Unfortunately, they now trail race-winner Mattias Ekstrom’s Team EKS (racing Audis) by 41 points.

As for the drivers, Kristoffersson is still in third place this season, while Marklund jumps ahead to 11th place. The teams are now headed to England where they’ll be joined by Tanner Foust for the fourth round of the championship at Lydden Hill Race Circuit.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
