VW’s Championship-Winning RallyCross Team Not Racing in 2019

The 2019 World Rallycross Championship will be without its champions for the 2019 season. PSRX, Volkswagen Motorsport’s partner in the series, has announced that it will not race this coming season.

“The important thing to understand here is that this is a pause – a pause and not an end,” said Petter Solberg, team owner and twice champion, in a statement. “As a team, we continue and we work together.”

Unfortunately, uncertainty is the word of the day here. Solberg cited uncertainty about next season’s entry list as a reason for the hiatus and added that the team might be back (though it’s uncertain) in the coming years.

“We can’t say much about this now, but there will be more to talk about in the New Year,” said Solberg. “I still believe in World RX. I still believe this championship can deliver the most sustainable, relevant, entertaining and competitive racing anywhere in the world.”

As for Volkswagen Motorsport, the possibility exists that another team will buy its race chassis, but it seems to be focused on series electrification.

“Naturally, Volkswagen Motorsport will keep a close eye on any developments towards the electrification of the sport of rallycross,” wrote the team in a statement. “From the beginning we have been supporters of this initiative and we continue to be interested.”

PSRX’s Johann Kristoffersson won last season’s championship, defeating the defending champ, Matthias Ekstrom, who drives an Audi S1.

The series largely races in Europe, though last year celebrated its first American race at the Circuit of the Americas, near Austin, Texas.

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively.
