Imprisoned Chairman’s Interim Replacement Becomes Audi’s Longterm Chairman

Bram Schot will become the chairman of Audi’s supervisory board as of January 1, 2019. He takes the position after serving as Audi’s interim leader following former CEO, Rupert Stadler’s arrest in June.

“As interim CEO, Bram Schot has already done a convincing job in recent months,” said Herbert Diess, the VW Group’s CEO. “With the benefit of a strong mandate, he will further accelerate the transformation of the company and lead the Four Rings to new successes.”

Along with the chairmanship, Schot will continue to be in charge of sales and marketing for the brand, the position from which he rose to the chairmanship, but only temporarily.

Schot has been in charge of sales of marketing since 2012, and in 2017 he rose to the board of management. He moved to that position from his job as President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Italia.

“The Audi workforce wants clear conditions at the top of the company,” says Peter Mosch, head of Audi’s works committee. “That’s why we employee representatives are committed to doing the job properly and appointing Bram Schot as Chairman of the Board of Management. During his interim period, he has already shown that he can give great impetus to the new start we have called for and initiated.”

Schot earned his position after Stadler was arrested in connection with the Dieselgate scandal. Although Audi initially stood by him, the company officially parted ways with Stadler in October.

Although he only recently renewed his contract with Audi, a sign of the company’s confidence in his leadership, many were critical of Stadler’s handling of the Dieselgate scandal.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything.
