Hot off the heels of the E-tron SUV and E-Tron GT Sportback, Audi is planning a more entry-level electric hatch. One that we could see in concept form in just a couple of months, according to a new report.
The new hatch would be A3 sized, making it a more premium rival for cars like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt.
Auto Express reports that it was speaking with Andreas Mindt, head of Audi exterior design, at the LA Auto Show. And Mindt was talking about the future of EV styling.
“You can design for the early adopters or you can design for the mainstream customer as well – we want to catch both,” Mindt said. “There are a lot of people out there who just want a good looking car, they are not interested if it’s an EV or a conventionally powered car – in a couple of months, we will show you a first draft.
Mindt also called designing a compact EV more difficult than making an electric supercar. “A super sports car that is low and wide is easy to design, like a penalty shot without a goalkeeper but an electric car that is low and sleek is a harder task. To make a small car look nice which is cheap for mass production is a very hard task.”
Expect this one to be based on the MEB platform shared with the Volkswagen I.D.
