There’s a lot of information out there about the VW Atlas, but one piece of information that’s been difficult to get a hold of is the width of child seat it can handle. That’s leading to a recall of 54,537 Atlases.
According to the recall, owner’s manuals didn’t provide a maximum width (12.6-inches) figure for child seats. If surpassed, a child seat could damage the buckling mechanism, which could increase the risk of injury to a child in any child seat.
Volkswagen is notifying owners now and will conduct a free inspection of center and left outboard seat belt buckles to ensure that they’re undamaged. If necessary, VW will replace the buckles free of charge.
An owner’s manual with the maximum width figure will also be provided to owners.
The recall is expected to begin on August 3, 2018.
