Continuing its dominance of mixed-surface racing, VW defended its lead in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
A lead in the European series means that Volkswagen tops the standings in the two major rallycross series currently operating.
This weekend, in Holjes, Sweden, Johann Kristoffersson extended his lead over both his teammate, Petter Solberg, and their major rival, Mattias Ekstrom.
The lead over Ekstrom was always going to extend, as the Audi driver had been called away from rallycross to race in the other series he competes in, DTM, but Kristoffersson made the most of his weekend by taking first place.
His weekend’s performance was good for 30 points, extending his lead over defending champ Ekstrom to 38 points.
“This is a very good feeling,” Kristoffersson told fiaworldrallycross.com. “To be able to win two consecutive events is a great sensation and one that I won’t forget anytime soon.”
His teammate Solberg didn’t fare quite as well, only earning 16 points and missing out on the weekend’s final race. Still, his performance was good enough to move him ahead of Ekstrom and into second place in the series.
Points are becoming more important now. Sweden marked the start of the second half of the Rallycross season. With only five races remaining, the competition will doubtless heat up as Ekstrom tries to come from behind to defend his championship.
The series is headed to Canada in a month’s time to race the series’ only North American stop.
