Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

2015 Rallylegend
RALLYLEGEND

Rally France winners Latvala/Anttila delight at “Woodstock on Wheels”

The winners of the most recent FIA World Rally Championship event, Jari-Matti Latvala and his co-driver Miika Anttila (FIN/FIN), thrilled tens of thousands of fans at the 2015 Rallylegend as they pulled off spectacular tricks on historic stage routes around San Marino (SM). In addition to Latvala’s 318 hp Volkswagen Polo R WRC, more than 170 other cars were in the starting line-up, including numerous legendary rally cars from the 1960s to the 1980s. It’s not without reason that the Rallylegend is also known as “Woodstock on Wheels” among the fans. “The Rallylegend is a very special event,” said Latvala. “Rally fans can experience rallying history up close and personal here, and are treated to a unique line-up of stars and vehicles.” Former world rally champions Juha Kankkunen (FIN) and Markku Alén (FIN) also took part. While former Formula 1 driver Érik Comas (F) won the classic standings, Latvala and Anttila head straight from San Marino to prepare for the penultimate WRC event of the current season, the Rally Spain (22-25 October).

Latvala eagerly awaits start in the legendary Audi quattro

After his start at the penultimate event of the FIA World Rally Championship season at the Rally Spain (22-25 October), Jari-Matti Latvala (FIN) will head straight to his next event. From 29 to 31 October, the championship runner-up will compete in the 18th edition of the International Lausitz Rally (D). Latvala will take to the track in the legendary Audi A2 quattro. “I am really looking forward to the Lausitz Rally already,” said Latvala. “The Audi quattro gives rally fans real goosebumps because it was as spectacular as it was successful in the 1980s. Sitting behind the wheel is a real pleasure.” The car belongs to Latvala, was built to be used in classic rallies and conforms to the Group B specification. A total of 18 special stages with around 180 timed kilometres almost exclusively on gravel are on the itinerary for the Lausitz Rally.

2018 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster Review

“Supercars just don’t excite me anymore.” These words, spoken to me over a month ago by another journalist, friend, and (so-called) enthusiast were echoing in my head for far too long, but they’ve finally been drowned out. Drowned out by the wail of a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine mounted in the middle of the new Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster. My friend’s point is that back in the good old days, there was a crop of supercars that captured the imagination with amazing style, sounds, performance, and more. Today, it seems like everything is capable of supercar performance, with large luxury sedans outdoing some of the best and most dedicated teams of car nuts, while former pillars of automotive excellence are suddenly pumping out family-friendly SUVs. Beyond that, another league of supercars, dubbed hypercars have cropped up with hybrid gas-electric powertrains that make magical things happen quickly, but at the cost of the acoustic drama, visual flair, and engag...

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively. Expect Ogier to climb the rankings, though. Not only did he win the rally last year, he has won every year since 2013. And with rain expected on Friday, Ogier’s chances are even better. “If it’s a bit wet then I hope I can make some good times,” said Ogier earlier today. “The best would be some good rain during the night so it’s a damp surface and then not too bad weather during the day so specators can enjoy the show without being too wet.” If it is dry, though, speed is on ...
