Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Oschersleben: former Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup champions impress

South Africans Kelvin van der Linde and Jordan Lee Pepper proved they are successful on the racetracks of this world when they won the title in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup in 2013 and 2014. The Volkswagen alumni have now both impressed with top-ten results for Audi at the opening round of the ADAC GT Masters in Oschersleben (D). Pepper, racing alongside Nicki Thiim (DK) finished eighth in race one, while van der Linde and his driving partner Stefan Wackerbauer (D) came home sixth in race two. Both van der Linde and Pepper lined up in an Audi R8 LMS ultra for the C. Abt Racing team. The next race weekend in the ADAC GT Masters will take place at the Red Bull Ring (A) from 5 to 7 May.

Winners in Oschersleben: Fluch and Kruger

Marcus Fluch (S) and Jeffrey Kruger (ZA) traded victories at the opening round of the Volkswagen Golf Cup Poland in Oschersleben. Kruger claimed both pole positions, but the South African could do nothing to prevent Marcus Fluch and Michal Gadomski passing him at the start of race one. The race then developed into a thrilling battle for the podium positions before the three drivers crossed the finish line in the same order – Fluch-Gadomski-Kruger. Kruger took revenge for his defeat in race two, winning ahead of Sweden’s Fluch and German Manuel Fahnauer, who finished sixth overall in last season’s Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup. The next race weekend in the Volkswagen Golf Cup Poland will be held at the Slovakiaring (SK) from 19 to 21 June.

Volkswagen luckless in Argentina – three points for Ogier

Volkswagen suffered a rare disappointment at the fourth round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in Argentina. None of the three Polo R WRC duos made it into the top ten. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) did manage to pick up three bonus points for winning the Power Stage. A problem with the power supply had already resulted in the Frenchmen retiring on Friday’s second special stage. Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) suffered a puncture on the same stage, and the two Norwegians then hit a rock and retired with a damaged suspension on the closing Power Stage. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) had flown the Volkswagen flag highest until Sunday’s final leg. However, a problem with the fuel supply forced the two Finns to retire whilst running third on the penultimate stage of the rally. Victory went to Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle (GB/IRL) ahead of their Citroën team-mates Mads Østberg/Jonas Andersson (N/S).

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions. Buy back offers are still only expected for the oldest 20,000 of the roughly 80,000 VW Group vehicles sold in America with the 3.0-liter TDI engine. Those vehicles are mostly SUVs, like ...
