Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Two Volkswagen teams ready to fight for the title

The championship runners-up Marklund Motorsport and the newcomers Volkswagen Team Sweden are ready for the start of the FIA World Rallycross Championship season in Montalegre, Portugal, this coming weekend. The two privateer teams supported by Volkswagen Sweden intend to be in the thick of the battles for victory in the championship’s 13 events. The former junior rally world champion Per-Gunnar “P-G” Andersson (S) is a new recruit at Marklund Motorsport and joins the old hand and championship runner-up Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen (FIN), who will once again be behind the wheel of the Polo RX Supercar that boasts up to almost 600 hp. The Volkswagen line-up is completed by the two drivers in the new Volkswagen Team Sweden, Johan Kristofferson of Sweden and Tord Linnerud of Norway. “The FIA World Rallycross Championship is becoming more and more popular. Volkswagen is represented in it by two extremely professional privateer teams that develop and enter their Polo RX Supercars independently. We’re confident that the Volkswagen drivers will be in the running for race victories and titles,” says Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director.

Arshansky wins season opener in Moscow

The new Volkswagen Polo Cup season in Russia got under way with a race win for Yuriy Arshansky (RUS) in Moscow. Together with his co-driver Mikhail Soskin (RUS), the entrant in the Russian and Baltic Rally Championships won the event after eight special stages over a distance of 65.9 kilometres. More than 15,000 fans made their way to the Olympics grounds in Moscow where the rowing and cycling heats were held in the summer of 1980 in order to watch the traditional Rally Masters Show. And they were offered top-notch entertainment: Arshansky, who hails from St Petersburg, took his Polo in first place ahead of Andrey Vavilin (RUS) and Dmitry Sokolov (RUS).

Second podium finish for Volkswagen team: Zulu/Arries take third place in the fog

Volkswagen Sasolracing clinched its second podium finish in the second event of the South African Rally Championship, in spite of the very difficult weather conditions. Gugulethu Zulu/Pierre Arries (ZA/ZA) were undeterred by the thick fog and rain at the Sasol Rally around Nelspruit and finished in third place in their Polo S 2000. This is the same position that was taken by Henk Lategan/Barry White (ZA/ZA) for Volkswagen at this year’s opening rally. These two were within striking distance of the lead at the Sasol Rally too, until an accident on the muddy tracks forced them to abandon all hope of a win on the second day. “We proved how fast the Polo is in these challenging conditions,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa. “I’m very happy for Gugu and Pierre. They achieved a good result for Volkswagen Sasolracing.”

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
