Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Ignatov becomes champion, rookie Rostilov wins final rally

Alexey Ignatov (RUS) has clinched the title in the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia. Ignatov made do with fourth place in Rally Tmutarakan, the final event of the 2014 season, to win the championship. This outcome didn’t actually look all that likely during the two-day rally as Ignatov struggled with some tyre trouble on his Polo. But his main rival Arkady Bogomolov (RUS) had his own problems, with his gearbox, and ultimately only managed to finish in sixth place, leaving the championship title open for Ignatov. The final rally of the season was won by newcomer Denis Rostilov (RUS), who pushed Yury Uryukov (RUS) and Andrey Vavilin (RUS) into second and third place respectively over the eight special stages with an aggregate distance of 112 kilometres. A total of eight teams lined up to compete in the final rally of the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia season.

Ogier and Ingrassia win in Spain and defend WRC titles with Volkswagen

The former world champions are now also the new world champions: Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (F/F) won Rally Spain to once again clinch the drivers’ and co-drivers’ WRC titles. Their seventh win of the season means that their teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN), who finished the rally in second place, bringing Volkswagen’s tally of one-two victories to ten, can no longer catch up with the two Frenchmen in the overall rankings of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Ogier/Ingrassia now have an unassailable lead of 31 points ahead of the final rally of the season in the UK. Third place in the rally on Spain’s Costa Daurada went to Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen (Ford). The third Volkswagen duo of Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) likewise secured their overall WRC position before the end of the season in Spain: having scored six points for finishing the rally in seventh place and also a bonus point for their third place in the power stage, the two Norwegians can no longer be bumped out of third place overall.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
