Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Latvala and the Volkswagen Polo R WRC enthral fans in San Marino

In the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Jari-Matti Latvala (FIN) is competing for the World Championship title, during the 2014 Rallylegend the Finn in his Volkswagen Polo R WRC was able to get underway without any pressure. The winner of the most recent WRC round in France delighted tens of thousands of motorsport fans with his spectacular driving on the track at the rally festival in San Marino (SM). “A fantastic three-day-long show in front of wonderful fans, Rallylegend isn’t called ‘Woodstock on wheels’ for nothing”, said Latvala after the event, at which the audience had the pleasure of seeing an unparalleled array of stars and vehicles. Among others, they had the honour of seeing former world champion Stig Blomqvist (S), Juha Kankkunen (FIN), Didier Auriol (F) and Markku Alén (FIN). The spectrum of over 150 rally cars ranged from the 60s era to current WRC vehicles. Furthermore, Peter Thul (D) “Head of Communication, Products and the Volkswagen AG Brand” was in the “Legend Stars” category as Michael Gerber’s (D) passenger in the legendary Audi Sport Quattro S1 – one of the few originals at the event. Whilst fans were able to examine the vehicle from the famous and notorious Group B Class at close range, Latvala had to head off directly after the Rallylegend event to prepare for the next WRC race, which is taking place in Spain on 23-25 October.

Istanbul: Heikkinen takes top place in the team rankings with Marklund in Polo RX

With another strong appearance at the penultimate event of the season at the FIA Rallycross Championship 2014 in Turkey, Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen (FIN) successfully defended second place in the driver rankings. At the same time, the Marklung motorsport team, which includes both of the over 500 PS powerful Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars of Heikkinen and Anton Marklund (FIN), took the lead in the team rankings. In Istanbul, Heikkinen delivered four gripping heats with Swede Timmy Hansen (S, Peugeot). After Heikkinen was able to win the first heat and had to be satisfied with tenth place in the second heat, it came to a direct dual in the third heat between him and Hansen, which the Swede narrowly won. In the fourth and final heat, Heikkinen secured more points with fourth place, with which he successfully confirmed second place in the overall ranking. With one event to go before the end of the season, Petter Solberg (N) – who has already secured the championship title – is at the front of the super car rankings with 250 points, followed by Heikkinen with 200. Third place in the overall rankings is occupied by Reinis Nittis (LR) with 182 points. The season finale will take place in San Luis, Argentina, on 28-29 November.

Imola: Verstappen celebrates his comeback, Blomqvist twice on the podium

After a disappointing first race, Max Verstappen (NL) was still able to celebrate the current season’s penultimate racing weekend at the former Formula One track in the Italian town of Imola. The seventeen year old racing talent, who is the youngest driver of all time to have secured a cockpit in Formula One, celebrated his comeback with a victory in the third race, after he deviated from the track after a collision in the first race and was unable to complete it. Together with second place in the second run, the Dutchman from the Van Amersfoort Racing team defended his position in second place of the driver rankings in a Volkswagen Dallara F312, while Esteban Ocon (F, Prema Powerteam) secured the FIA Formula 3 European Championship 2014 title early ahead of the season finale in Hockenheim (D, 17-19 October). Tom Blomqvist (GB, Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) also put in a strong drive in Imola after he managed to win the second race and come third in the first race.

Allure team celebrates double victory in Spa

At the six-house race at the “Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps“, the Belgian Allure team celebrated a double victory. In the sixth race of the season in the Volkswagen Fun Cup Belgium, Team 1 took first place after completing the approximately seven kilometre long Formula 1 track after a total of 94 laps. Almost three minutes later, the second Allure team crossed the finish line and cinched the double victory. Going into the race from the second starting grid, Team 1 worked their way through the field and took the lead after two hours, something they did not surrender until the end of the race with an error-free run. Team 2 had pole position in the qualifying session, but fell back to sixth place after three hours, before spectacularly catching up within one racing hour and taking second place.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

T-Prime Makes World Premiere at Beijing

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The SUV segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the world and Volkswagen is showing the world how to do it. With the new T-Prime Concept GTE that was revealed today, the company is showing off all of the technology you can look for in its coming models. The T-Prime is a full-size hybrid SUV that can go up to 31 miles on a charge and gets 87 mpg. The hybrid power station is good for 375 hp and 516 lb/ft of torque and puts the power down with 4MOTION all wheel drive. It’ll get you up to 60 in six seconds. The concept’s real party piece, though, is its interior, which features exclusively touch, gesture, and voice controls. Everything from the infotainment, to the display, and even the gears are controlled by touch-screen. The T-Prime Concept GTE is bigger than the Touareg, and design elements are likely to find their way into all of their SUVs, of which there will be many. Volkswagen is also announcing that they expect to make an S...

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...
